Specialty Tools: Where to Buy & Find Them

Hello.

I need the 'crankshaft locking tool T10050' from VW for the timing belt replacement. Where can I get this specialized tool, or a dimensioned sketch to build it myself?

I would also be interested in the exact dimensions. Has anyone perhaps already made this tool themselves, or does anyone have a CAD drawing or something like that?

Thanks for the tips. I just ordered the Hazet set 2588/3 (crankshaft locking tool = 'T10050', locating pins = 'T10008' and locating pin = '3359') for EUR 69.99 (including VAT). I'll receive the tools in mid-May, then it's time to replace the timing belt on my engine!

Hello!

So, I borrowed the camshaft alignment tool and the bolt for securing the crankshaft position sensor (AFN) from a VW workshop for two hours, and then had a locksmith make me a copy of it.
They work perfectly fine. They cost me 12 German Marks back then.

Just a thought.

It's about a pump-injector . For the VP37 TDI, you can make it yourself (or have it made) , and you are right about that.

Here's a dumb question: What is the purpose of the crankshaft locking mechanism?

Put the car in 5th gear, move it until the drivetrain is under load, one person steps on the brake, and that's it?
The clutch needs to be able to handle the engine's approximately 300 Nm of torque, and shouldn't any screw on the crankshaft be tightened securely?

It is possible that the crankshaft could twist when tightening the belt . At least, this thin part is not sufficient to hold the crankshaft in place if the crankshaft bolt is loosened. You really need to use the VW 3099 for that... but the bolt doesn't actually need to be loosened to change the timing belt, does it?

When I changed the timing belt on my 1Z engine, I wished I had a part like this to lock the crankshaft. It's quick and easy, and you can easily be one tooth off! Without it, it quickly becomes a test of patience!

Hi Jörg,

I've come up with a little trick for that:

You need to rotate the crankshaft slightly counterclockwise (about 1-2cm measured from the TDC mark) before installing the timing belt. Then, try to install the timing belt, and when you are doing so, make sure to route the belt over the water pump (WRP). While doing this, rotate the crankshaft into the TDC position under tension . This ensures that the number of teeth between the eccentric pulley (ESPRad) and the crankshaft is correct, which prevents the crankshaft from rotating when tightening the timing belt . If it does, the valve timing will not be correct afterward .

That's exactly what I did after the third failed attempt!

But next time, only use a torque wrench!
