Exhaust Smoke: Diagnose Engine Damage?

Hello,


Can you distinguish between worn piston rings and faulty valve stem seals based on the type of smoke coming from the exhaust? I can rule out the turbocharger because I don't have significant oil consumption. However, especially in the first two gears, there's quite a bit of smoke coming out the back.
Or will I inevitably have to take the engine apart?

Hi Toto,

Then you can also rule out the piston rings and crankshaft seals, as these are often associated with increased oil consumption.

Please use the search function and look for "VTG", "EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)", and "fuel injectors". I assume a verschandeln air filter and unimpeded, bubble-free airflow in the fuel system.

I can only speak from my own experience with gasoline prices.

Kadett-D 1.3S with a significant oil leak upon starting, and an oil consumption per 1000km that allows a Lupo TDI to travel 60km.

(The cloud was so incredible that a friend of mine drew a caricature of it.)

After replacing the valve stem seals, the white smoke at startup disappeared, but the oil consumption only improved slightly. The engine then failed at 220,000 km due to a problem with the 4th cylinder. Specifically, the valve spring for that cylinder broke, and I suspect that was the main cause of the failure (leading to secondary damage). The compression was still reasonably good.
but the structural integrity of the shell was completely compromised.
I decided not to proceed with the breakdown.
