Hello,

If you manually move the actuation lever of the EGR valve on a PD TDI (ASZ) engine, is it normal to hear a hissing sound coming from the vicinity of the turbocharger pressure control valve?

The reason I'm mentioning this is because I suspect there might be a leak in that area, and I wanted to give the workshop a heads-up.

Why don't you try using a vacuum pump to draw the liquid from the cans?
You can easily convert a bicycle pump into a vacuum pump by turning the piston inside.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Roger,

"Control lever for the EGR valve on PD TDI engines (ASZ)?"

Although I am only 99% sure, I believe that the ASZ does not have any externally accessible AGR levers.

What you probably mean is the rod for the shut-off valve.
If you move them while the engine is running, you'll cut off the air supply to the engine, and you'll start to hear a hissing sound in the gap in the intake manifold - just like with a carburetor at idle.

If you can hear a hissing sound (like with an open carburetor), there's likely a leak somewhere between the spark plug and the shut-off valve, allowing air to be drawn in.

However, this hole would have to be surrounded by a pool of oil, because under load, the turbocharger's boost pressure would force oil mist out of the crankcase seal in that area.

I meant with the engine idling. I did a little searching yesterday because it seems like the car isn't building boost properly anymore. The "bump" around 2,000 RPM has decreased, and the torque curve seems to be more like a naturally aspirated engine. But it seems like there's been no change at higher RPMs.

I know that I should really do a diagnostic run now, but without a laptop, that won't be possible. When will VAG-Com finally be available for the Palm icon_cool.gif?

Well, I'm still under warranty. Those guys in the workshop should do something for their money. The first service is also due soon.

Thank you both!

Hmm, you want to test the AGR valve, or something? What do you mean by 'first service'? Is the car still under warranty?

Best regards, WarLord.

@Warlord:

No, my primary concern was the airtightness of the vacuum hoses around the EGR valve, VTG (variable geometry turbocharger), BKV (boost control valve), etc. I'm ruling out a faulty EGR valve for now, as it produces very little smoke. Almost too little, I think.

The warranty is still valid, and there are 2,700 km remaining until the first service (currently, the total mileage is 25,600 km).
