'Where is the AGR valve located on my Galaxy, model year 1998, with a TDI 90PS engine (non-PD)? Is it this hose here that I should disconnect and seal?'

That is the EGR valve.

Okay, I'll try that.
And the 'metal gasket' probably goes between the can's mounting point and the silver, curved tube (likely the intake manifold?).
