Hello everyone,
Does anyone know if it's possible to fit a longer 5th gear into a 12/99 Seat Alhambra 1.9 TDI (AFN) engine?

I saw in the transmission specifications that the transmission type is DJY.
Currently, there are 29:42 teeth. A DGW (Passat AFN) would have 27:41.
That probably wouldn't be enough yet.

I'm familiar with the other threads on the same topic.
The entire 6-speed transmission (including clutch and starter) is too expensive for me.

Does anyone know?

Hi Supi!

Replacing the gears of the 5th gear is relatively straightforward because the conversion can be done with the transmission/engine still installed.
Using the DGW gear ratios, you would achieve a 4.85% longer gear ratio. I think that's enough. You shouldn't make the jump between 4th and 5th gear too large, otherwise you might lose "sync" when upshifting.
Have you modified your vehicle? If so, how much more power does it have now?
Without any adjustments, I would not allow the translation to exceed 4.85% in length.

Just as a calculation example: After the modification, you'll be able to drive approximately 190 km/h at the same engine speed that previously allowed you to drive 180 km/h. That's quite good, isn't it?

Regards,
Alex.

So far, nothing has been adjusted or optimized.
If you're going to tune a car, then do it to increase the top speed.
However, since a TDI engine seems to lose power around 4200 RPM,
The transmission has been long enough to transfer power to reach the maximum speed.
The 5-speed gearboxes in the Sharan (7MS) have too short of a gear ratio, which ultimately isn't very useful.
Well, being too long isn't good either, (especially considering the cw-value of a cell phone tower icon_smile.gif).

I have no idea how or where to do it on the transmission. I'd probably need some help with that.
Let the professionals handle it.

Hello,

@donalexoViewing profile: donalexo

You're generally right with your suggestions, but it's not that simple to make the exchange.
"It doesn't fit the DJY transmission because it's not compatible with the common 02 series."
which you probably thought.
"With this gearbox, there is no cover plate located behind the 5th gear."
It would actually need to be expanded and completely renovated.
However, it seems that this type of part is only used in the Sharan/Alhambra/Galaxy models.
I only found it there, anyway.

@ supi

What makes you think of the crazy idea of doing that with a longitudinally mounted DGW?
Do any parts fit into your transversely mounted DJY gearbox?
I find that very hard to imagine.

Perhaps a DBV gearbox (which is the same series as yours) might help.
It has a longer axle ratio (69:17) compared to yours (72:17), but it also has a...
shorter 5th (33:41). So, it would still need to be modified, or you could install it in yours.
Gears that provide the axle ratio from the DBV.
That will definitely be quite a mess, one way or another. icon_rolleyes.gif

Best regards, Frank.

P.S. There was a mistake in your original post; your fifth entry was translated as 29:43.

@Frank

Yes, yes, the ideas. I have already admitted my ignorance.icon_redface.gif

I was simply trying to find gearboxes that could be compatible with AFNs.

Thank you for the information.

Then the 6-speed version is probably a more sensible choice.

But it's probably cheaper for me to replace the entire vehicle than to do a conversion. After all, there are only a few months between the model year of my car and the 6-speed model.

But who would willingly give up a car that's been owned from new, just to have one more gear?

Hello,

"In my opinion, it doesn't make sense to install a longer fifth gear with a stock AFN engine. With the 110 hp engine in the estate car, you won't be able to go much faster than 185 km/h. Even the 130 hp PD engine struggles to reach 195 km/h. So, don't expect too much."

Best regards,
Christian.

Hi,

Doesn't it have the Ford transmission?

'I drove a really cool Alhambra this weekend. It had 110 horsepower with a chip tuning. It could go up to just over 190 km/h, then it was fully in the red zone. The owner asked me if anything could be done about it, but with that gearbox, you have to pull a lever up, and then reverse is on the lower right... Did VW ever build anything like that?'
