The stepper motors were a very common issue across all vehicle models until around 2004. I personally experienced this problem with two vehicles. One of them was a 9N with manual air conditioning .

However, even within the Volkswagen Group, things can improve, and therefore, I believe that the electric motors were not particularly problematic in later production years.

But it wasn't really manual, but rather that strange semi-automatic thing.
Fortunately, with the Rapid, you can hear the temperature and air distribution flaps clicking when you quickly adjust the rotary knobs. The only actuator inside is, as far as I know, for the recirculation flap, and thankfully, in at least the heating system of the 9N model, it didn't have a potentiometer for position feedback.

Let's hope that the memory of the Climatronic problems at VAG remains vivid enough so that the cheapest possible stepper motors are not purchased again.

The problem resolved itself... so far, the issue hasn't occurred again.
