But then it wasn't really manual, but rather this strange semi-automatic thing.
Fortunately, in the Rapid, you can hear the temperature and air distribution flaps clicking when you quickly adjust the rotary controls. The only stepper motor in there, in my opinion, is for the recirculation flap, and thankfully, in at least the heater version of the 9N, it didn't have a potentiometer for angle sensing.

Let's hope that the memory of the Climatronic problems at VAG remains vivid enough that the cheapest stepper motors are not purchased again.
