Hello,
Yesterday, I installed the original PDC retrofit kit (part number 1K0 054 630 B) strictly according to the instructions. Everything went smoothly, however, I am unable to successfully initialize/calibrate the PDC system.
The car is positioned 50 cm away from the obstacle, and with the ignition on, reverse gear is engaged. Two short beeps sound, indicating the start of the learning process. However, unfortunately, within 100 seconds, there is no single, prolonged beep that would signify the successful completion of the learning process.
I've already tried various obstacles, but unfortunately with the same result. This was also true when using and not using a trailer hitch.
During one of the many attempts, I temporarily disconnected the power cable to the control unit and reconnected it after a few seconds. Then, the buzzer sounded continuously, which, according to the manual, is supposed to indicate that an obstacle has not been detected. However, this sound should occur during the learning process, so it's questionable how to interpret it after disconnecting and reconnecting the power cable.
My assumptions:
- Possibly a defective control unit.
- Possibly one or more sensors are defective (theoretically, the issue might be related to the paint job, but this is less likely because the sensors can be painted, and the layer of paint in the car's color, as well as the clear coat applied after it dries, is very thin).
-The instructions state: "The original parking distance control system is not suitable for installation in vehicles that have been lowered after purchase (e.g., with a sports suspension)." My car is a 2.0 TDI 4motion with R-Line trim, and as far as I know, it has a sports suspension. However, the quoted sentence seems contradictory because of the word "after purchase." Does this mean that parking distance control systems are generally not possible with a sports suspension, or does it mean that lowering the vehicle after installing a successfully calibrated PDC is not supported?
What do you mean?
Thank you very much!
Best regards,
Dieter.

Hello Dieter,
What learning process are you referring to? Can you provide a source for that?
Installation instructions: link or via private message?
The PDC (Parking Distance Control) essentially works like a "sonar" system. It typically does not require a calibration process because the speed of sound in air, which is used to calculate the distance, is relatively constant and independent of the vehicle.
Best regards, Rainer.

Okay, I've learned something again.
Most likely, the "learning process" is more of a functional check, for reasons mentioned above.

Suggest a concrete wall or barrier, with a height of at least 50 cm.

It's possible that the sensors are connected incorrectly. The order is usually important.

The PDC (Parking Distance Control) system itself is the relevant component, but not the installation height above the ground. A specific minimum and maximum height of the sensors above the ground is required.
Best regards, Rainer.

Leider bereits gestern ausprobiert... Without success.
Quote: | | Could it be that the sensors are possibly connected incorrectly? The order is usually not irrelevant. |
The sensors themselves did not have sequential numbering; for example, two were labeled with a "2" and two with a "3," which made it impossible to establish a correct order. This is different from the cable that connects to the sensors and also to the control unit (see instructions).
Quote: | | The PDC is the chassis component, regardless of the installation height above the ground. A specific minimum and maximum height of the sensors above the ground is expected. |
To rule out this as a cause, the following is probably recommended:
-Someone is using a similar aftermarket parking sensor installed on their Volkswagen Golf 5 to measure the distance to the ground.
-VW informs me about the minimum ground clearance.
-You raise the vehicle to a height similar to that of a Golf 5 without a sports suspension or lowered suspension, and then try connecting it again.
I would like to mention that while the set was original and new, I purchased it through eBay Kleinanzeigen (a local classifieds platform). Therefore, theoretically, some of the components could be defective despite being new (of course, a defect could also occur if it were purchased directly from VW).

I wanted to let you know that I was able to fix the problem and the parking assist system is now working reliably!
Unlike the Volkswagen accessory service, Caratec's customer support is a prime example of fast and competent service.
There's a simple trick to test if a sensor is working: When the ignition is turned on and the reverse gear is engaged, you need to go very close to a sensor with your ear and gently swipe it with your finger. If the sensor is working, you will hear a slight crackling sound; otherwise, there will be silence. In one case, this silence indicated a faulty sensor, and after replacing it with a new one, the successful pairing process was quick.
Okay, now I hope I can also solve the problem with the auxiliary heater soon (there's already a thread about it in the sub-forum "Transmission, Chassis, Body and Interior").

Thank you for the feedback!
For informational purposes only: Other parking assistance systems (retrofit installations) test the sensors before each use, and defective sensors are clearly identified by a beeping sound.
Best regards, Rainer.

Or install the original parts. The diagnosis will then depend on that.
can be analyzed excellently with VCDS .
I did that on our Polo - it's a dream .. just like the original.
The Touran provides a contrasting example. Here, the tow hitch was installed using the original retrofitting kit. It works fine so far – the electronics are functioning.
however, not accessible for diagnosis Touran 5T1 / DFGA / TGV; Fabia 6Y5 / BNV / GGV
