Hey everyone.
I have a problem and I'm hoping for a little tip.
When accelerating hard in first gear (I try to avoid it, but it sometimes happens when starting quickly at an intersection), my 1Z occasionally produces a lot of black smoke, and from the feeling and sound, it seems to be running on only two cylinders.
Pressing the accelerator pedal doesn't really achieve much, except that it allows the engine to keep running, albeit with sputtering and even more soot.
After a few seconds, it starts up again as if nothing happened.
What could be the reason for that?
So far, I haven't been able to extract any error messages from the control unit.
Otherwise, it runs without any problems.
Best regards, Alex. Gruß Schneemann

Hi, is the timing belt sprocket on the crankshaft tight?
Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Rainer,
Yes, the sprocket is very tight. I tightened it back then (it was in March) with a new screw, according to the specifications of a friend who is a mechanic, to about 100 Nm, and with a bit of thread locker, after he had experienced some serious failures.
Otherwise, it works perfectly fine.
Perhaps I should just stop trying to take advantage of the little guy so much. Gruß Schneemann

'I experienced something similar with my 1Z. In my case, it was due to the chip. I had a power box, and when I turned it on in the 1Z while simultaneously giving it full throttle, the engine went into emergency mode, made a strange noise, and smoked like a coal furnace.'
However, it only happened sporadically, and the error memory didn't show anything.
I'm not sure why, but I can imagine that too much fuel was injected, which overwhelmed the engine. That's just a guess.

@Golfmann:
The thing about the power box confused me. I had one installed before, actually, just recently when it was so hot in the summer. Is it theoretically possible that there could be lingering soot residue, even though the box has already been removed?
It will forever remain a mystery ...

Snowman Gruß Schneemann

So you took the box apart again!?
Very good decision.
Shortly after the engine started experiencing the issues described above, it failed. There was a hole in the piston, which was likely caused by the chip.

...or a faulty injector! Which could also explain the misfires and black smoke!
Best regards, Rainer.

Okay, here I am again.
I think I've solved the problem. I was on the highway again after a long time and tried to give my four-wheeled friend some encouragement. It didn't work.
Instead, there were the "rhythmic acceleration fluctuations" that have been described here many times before. This happened last weekend. The error code in the memory was "Intake manifold pressure control difference."
On Mondays, I sometimes bought a new boost pressure valve just for fun and took it for a test drive. During that test drive, I also tried my "sudden acceleration" maneuver several times, as described above. Neither of those problems occurred again.
Needless to say, I got the tip about the valve from this forum.
Thank you very much.
It's hard to imagine what it would have been like if I had gone to our local VAG (vehicle registration authority). A concentrated lack of knowledge combined with greed. Gruß Schneemann
