Upgrading MFL Caddy box 2018 - Error 31

Since I was 18, I've been buying damaged cars, repairing them, and driving them myself or letting my family drive them. We typically drive BMWs or VWs. With BMWs, I've done some basic diagnostics using Carly, which was sufficient for my needs. Four weeks ago, I bought a 2018 Caddy van that was involved in an accident. My old 2010 model is increasingly nearing the end of its life. The 2018 model has a simpler steering wheel and doesn't have a tow hitch." Since I already built a Caddy Maxi 2017 last year and was missing the diagnostic software then, I watched some videos online, and ultimately my decision fell on the VCDS system. I bought the €499 version as a workshop kit.

Now, let's get to the problem:
I purchased an MFL online and contacted the dealer to inquire about replacing the control unit or slip ring in my car. They checked and said I only needed to replace the small wiring harness connected to the airbag. I ordered the harness, installed the entire steering wheel, and, full of anticipation, tried to code it using VCDS. Unfortunately, I always get the error message 31.

Welcome! Regarding the many errors appearing in the control units, I recommend ensuring sufficient power supply during diagnosis (possibly using a charger) and clearing all errors first.
If something is broken, the relevant errors will inevitably reappear sooner than you'd like, and you'll still have those items lying around that are remnants of previous modifications or repairs.

Basically, first of all: Is the steering angle being displayed correctly in the measurement data blocks?

Regarding the steering column control unit (control unit address 16), we need to determine whether it supports MFL (Multi-Function Lever), but I don't know the answer to that.
You can then go to the coding assistant from the control unit information of the steering column control unit and see what the individual bytes of the coding mean. Absolutely no input of "anything" here!

If you modify something, you can see the original coding in the old Autoscan and, in case of an error, revert to it.

Thank you for the quick response. I've now connected the charger to the battery. The car is scheduled to go to the paint shop on Wednesday. Once it's back, I'll finish assembling everything, clear the error codes, and try the coding again. I'll let you know then. Happy Sunday!

As Rainer correctly suspected, your Caddy is equipped with a Midline steering angle sensor (Index BE). This does not support MFL not.

You need a Highline version.

The current version is 5K0 953 569 BD. This version also supports your MFA+ and your Speedometer+.

The part number matches. According to the parts catalog, that would also be the current version.

It's almost 100.00 € cheaper than buying it directly from the manufacturer.
