Hello everyone,
I am Martin, I am 46 years old, and I am from Dresden.
Okay, here are my questions.
What is the expected lifespan of the engine mentioned above? It's a 5-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine with an intercooler and 100 horsepower.
People often experience problems in the head area, such as heat and the resulting cracks.
Furthermore, the question remains whether it is possible to fix these problems and prevent them from recurring.
If we can resolve these issues, the next question would be how much more power we can potentially extract from the engine. We're not talking about a huge increase, maybe something in the range of 20-30 horsepower.
I would appreciate constructive feedback.
Regards,
Martin.

Hi,
Since you're asking for a constructive answer: This model is at least 30 years old. Cars like this are considered classic cars, but you shouldn't force a motor with 20-30 extra horsepower into it. Otherwise, you'll just end up with the typical problems that are associated with such modifications.

Basically, I want to agree with Herbert!
However, I'll chime in with some input, as I used to have one of those vehicles in my company's fleet from 1992 to 2008.
After the tuning to 133 horsepower (using a piggyback ECU), at approximately 70,000 km, all five pistons broke after a full-throttle run on the highway. It likely happened while the engine was being turned off/cooling down, as it arrived without any smoke and wouldn't start the next day. So, we checked the compression and then took it apart. The cylinder liners were still okay, and the piston rings had held everything together. There were already visible hairline cracks in the cylinder head between the valve seats, but we decided to ignore them because we had a spare cylinder head on hand.
New pistons with piston rings were installed to the original dimensions. A larger intercooler, the wastegate was modified for later opening, an additional oil cooler, and a slightly shorter injection duration resulted in a stable 128 horsepower, which lasted until 430,000 km without the attached cylinder head ever causing any problems. However, the drivetrain components wore out quickly, as they were not designed for the sudden increase in torque. I loved this car. Once you got used to the monstrous turbo lag (clutch), it was a joy to drive, and I haven't achieved such low fuel consumption with a similar engine displacement until the new Arteon.
I still have a turbocharger and fuel injection pump lying around that I could use for that car.

Hello Martin,
It's actually a nice engine. Let's just keep the performance as it is "from the factory," otherwise you'll just end up with the problems people worry about. It's old school, but that definitely has its charm. Best regards, Daphnis.
