Hello!

I've been experiencing increasingly vibrating side mirrors whenever I drive faster than 60-70 km/h. Today, I took a closer look and noticed that the glass in both side mirrors of my G7 (manufactured in 11/15) has come loose from the mounting plate.

Does anyone have a tip on how to reattach them? Or should I just replace them?

And if there are new ones, are there any manufacturer recommendations? With the original ones (which, by the way, aren't exactly cheap), I can assume that they will eventually wear out. Or are there any improved versions available now?

This problem seems to be a known issue. I've read about people who have had their rearview mirrors fall out while driving or while locking the door. 8O

Best regards to everyone!

Hello,

I'm guessing you have automatic dimming mirrors because they cost less than a case of beer without.

On my old A6, the heating film was double-sided adhesive, and with a hairdryer, caution, and a lot of patience, it can be removed from the mirror.
Does the film come off the plastic support or the mirror from the film?

Important: verschandeln the carrier plate (plastic) e.g. with acetone, but be careful, as some plastics may be damaged. Therefore, do not simply pour acetone over it. If the heating film no longer sticks, you can buy an inexpensive, non-glare mirror and use its heating film.

The important thing is to always heat it up properly with a hair dryer and not to rub it around with greasy fingers, then it will stick.
There is also double-sided tape for carpets that sticks very well. Seal the edges with it so that no water gets in, I did this with acrylic construction adhesive. It has lasted on both sides for more than 100,000 km, even when I sold the A6.

Hi,

this is a problem with the G7. In any case, any adhesive won't work, even if it seems like a good solution at first. The adhesive will eventually be visible through the mirror.

I replaced a mirror glass with a replica part from Alcar. It costs well under 20€. However, it distorts slightly more than the original when transitioning to the aspherical part. A heated, aspherical mirror glass from VW costs around 50€.

Please take care of this promptly, as chipped glass can easily damage the paint on the door or side panel.
Gruß
Roger

I had this on my Passat 3C (only heated, not self-dimming).

Since I had to commute to work by car, I temporarily attached it with carpet tape.
Surprisingly, it lasted for two years until I sold the car. However, it became wobbly again towards the end.
I don't remember seeing any impressions of the tape in the mirror.

So, as a temporary solution, it was relatively usable. But definitely not a permanent solution.

Tape does not leave visible traces, if that is what you thought. It is also factory-sealed this way.

However, with adhesives (liquids), there is almost always the problem, hence the warning.

Hello!

I had the same problem with my Passat 3C. Not dimming, but heatable.

It was only one side initially, and then the other side after a year. The glass was only hanging on the outer edge, and the adhesive on the mirror side was completely hardened and dried out. The adhesive on the other side was still sticky.

The solution that has lasted for several years: First, remove all remaining adhesive from both sides between the mirror glass and the heating pad using IPA (or adhesive remover). The black layer on the mirror glass must remain, otherwise it will shine through. Then, apply Uhu Endfest 2K evenly to the heating pad and reattach it to the mirror glass. Finally, attach the plastic support plate either with the still sticky material on the heating pad or with Uhu Endfest, and let it harden for 24 hours. Endfest is specified up to 100 C, so I used that one.

Greetings,
Christoph

That's right. I had done the same thing on my Passat and didn't replace the mirror glass, but instead glued it back in with grey body filler (Liqui Moly 6154). I just happened to have that on hand at the time. Under certain lighting conditions, you could see the adhesive in the mirror glass. But it didn't really bother me.
Most importantly, it held.

Hello,

another note for readers: The non-automatic dimming mirrors cost €20 in parts shops, and sometimes as little as €10.

I simply state that if you don't have any adhesive, there's absolutely no point in doing so.

The automatic dimming mirrors may not be available in the aftermarket (they weren't for my previous Audi A6 4F) or may cost several hundred EUR each.

Gentlemen,

I finally had the time to deal with this. I carefully removed the two mirror panels from the heat-resistant film, which was still completely glued to the plastic supports (there was only a tiny residue of adhesive left on the panels - see pictures).

Then I removed the plastic strips with heating films from the mirror housings, cleaned them with isopropyl alcohol, and applied double-sided adhesive tape to the entire surface. I then shaped them with a utility knife: Tesa Extra Strong adhesive tape, extra strong, No. 05686-00018 - suitable for damp rooms and underfloor heating icon_cool.gif - Sticks like glue 8O

How long this will last, or whether the heated mirrors will come through, remains to be seen. icon_cool.gif In any case, nothing is wobbling anymore, and nothing seems to be coming through the glass from the adhesive tape - it's completely covered.

Zitat:
I suspect you have heated mirrors with automatic dimming, because they cost less than a case of beer without.

Only the heated ones are available. Original VW glass for both sides together over 100 Eumel icon_evil.gif The Tesa adhesive tape: 5 Eumel +1

Zitat:
One more tip for readers: The non-automatic dimming mirrors cost 20 EUR in parts shops, sometimes even under 10 EUR

Are there any quality differences between original and aftermarket glass?

So, you mean glass that falls off after a few years (original) versus, in the worst case, falling off after a few years (accessory)?

It's not rocket science, a mirror glass with heating film and a plastic injection-molded carrier. Are there still any non-heated rear-view mirrors in cars?

That's why the heated (non-automatic dimming) rearview mirror cost only the equivalent of 1 case of beer for the Audi A6 4F back then.

I really can't understand why people are doing this, when you can just buy a new one. Hourly wage is 4 EUR. It's different when you're trying to rip someone off for 200-300 EUR and spend 2 hours doing it. icon_cool.gif

No, I mean differences in the glass itself - distortions, discoloration, and so on...

Just for fun and because I can! 8)

If there are any more issues with the mirrors, of course there will be replacement parts available!

Well, I used a small amount of regular silicone sealant to seal the glass. It's been holding for years, and there's nothing unsightly visible on the mirror surface icon_smile.gif

I would not use silicone sealant for gluing because it is very acidic and can damage all metals.
Just a tip. 😉
