Hello everyone,
I'm in the process of installing a V6 TDI engine, with the engine code AFB, into my boat. If I had known what a headache this would be, I would have left it alone.
My problem is that I have to acquire all the missing parts gradually. A large auction house makes it possible at a reasonable cost...
The engine, which came from a vehicle declared a total loss (supposedly a 2000 Passat), came with the wiring harness and control unit. However, nothing else. I got a combination instrument this weekend, and now I'm still missing the keys with the reading coil. They are relatively inexpensive to obtain from VW, but they require the vehicle's VIN to program the keys. However, I don't have the VIN because the vehicle itself no longer exists.
Can I find out the vehicle identification number (VIN) based on the engine number? If so, where (VW is often very reluctant to provide this information)? Or can I order keys for the new instrument cluster and have the engine control unit (ECU) adjusted? Can I read the VIN from the instrument cluster? Does it need to be installed for that?
Does anyone have wiring diagrams for this issue (Engine Control Unit <-> Instrument Cluster <-> Reading Coil <-> OBD Connector)?
Perhaps there are even simpler solutions? I also have a very difficult time getting to VW by boat...
I would be very grateful for any advice, no matter how small. Things are starting to become less enjoyable.
Christian.

That's a bit awkward right now...
If you had a pre-programmed key for the instrument cluster, it would be very simple.
You first need to find out which immobilizer version the car has (IMMO-2 or IMMO-3). Then, you can look up the information accordingly at http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/index.html.
Of course, an IMMO-2 would be better for you.
'But, on the occasion, you could install a seawater-resistant combination instrument, modify the speedometer to display knots, and adjust the fuel gauge accordingly. If you obtain a key (which, with a programmed combination instrument, could be any key with a compatible transponder, for example, a broken one or from a salvaged vehicle) and install the transponder in the boat key, along with the reading coil... then you'll have an anti-theft system on the boat. I think that's probably how it's intended to work, or at least possible.'
but don't give up, the AFB is definitely making good progress .

Why so private? I would also be interested! Or is it so secretive that one has to 'investigate' everything in the utmost secrecy?

So, a problem after all?
Even if it's a lot, it would be a learning experience for some of us, including myself.

hi!
It's very dangerous to talk about something when you explain it in detail.
I would really like to help, but not like that.
Best regards,

Hi,
The learning effect could be greater than desired. There are other reasons why someone might have a control unit but not a key.
I wouldn't post instructions like that either, if I could. Gruß Christian

That's exactly what I mean. If someone misunderstands that, I'll be the one to blame.

Well, unfortunately, there's no key for it. But as I've already read, there's always a way. It would be great if everything worked out as discussed here in the forum. Thanks for your good tips. I hope CorradoTDI will continue to support me... Also, thank you again for the wiring diagrams. It's a real help.
Best regards,
Christian
