Hi.

After hearing the muffled ticking of a 150 hp V6 TDI engine again this morning, I wanted to ask:

What exactly is meant by "full encapsulation"?

My 1Z probably doesn't have one (the wheel well). icon_rolleyes.gif
The TDI Volvo is also supposed to not have them, that's how I understood that comment: https://community.dieselschrauber.org/en/viewtopic.php?t=4830&highlight=vollkapselung

The W124 diesel models also had one.

Is that just a lot of foam in the engine compartment? I can't imagine that.

Hi,
All the TDI engines I know have a full enclosure. This means that the engine compartment is as closed as possible. The drive shafts and tie rods pass through foam flaps. The radiator is partially closed with rubber fins when the car is stationary. Additional insulation material is also added to the hood, etc. A partial enclosure would be, for example, the plate on the engine mount, as found in the Passat up to 1988.

So, you can't really call that small amount of insulation in the 1Z "full encapsulation."

It has this plastic tray at the bottom (which still has a huge hole for the oil pan) and some fabric in the hood.

From the cat flap, you can see all the way to the back of the house (which is open).

These very same damping measures were already in place with the G2.

With a full encapsulation, you can assume that everything is sealed. If I remember correctly, the 190D also had this feature, although in the older Daimler ship diesel engines, the fan is connected to the timing belt and engaged via a clutch. In my Golf (IV ASZ), a lot is sealed, but you can still see the ground quite well through a gap from about 10 cm behind the transmission. What's remarkable to me is that my engine compartment looks almost like new, as if it hasn't been used at all. The existing cover also has the effect of preventing moisture from the previous owner from getting in (or rather, it prevents it almost entirely).

Hm,

My G3 is also far from airtight at the front.

Besides the headlights, enough light gets in to create nice patterns in the engine compartment.

I had already considered adding more soundproofing to the engine compartment.

My sister's Megane even has rubber flaps on top of the fenders, facing forward, to prevent anything from getting in or out.

So, the change is not to the MOTOR itself, but to its surroundings?

There is a distinction between "motor-distant" and "motor-proximal" encapsulation. "Motor-distant" refers to the engine compartment, where, of course, the radiator must be open, at least when the fan is running or during driving. Furthermore, the air must also be able to flow out, which would be the passage from the catalytic converter to the engine block. In my Audi 100, however, this passage is located quite far back.
The purpose of the device is to reduce both external noise and air resistance in diesel engines.
Close to the engine, there's a neat-looking plastic cover around and on the cylinder head, which unfortunately hides any oil leaks or other issues that might be present.

after I heard again this morning the muffled ticking of a 150 hp V6 TDI engine.

Muted ticking sound on the V6 TDI? It sounds like a hammering noise, in my opinion.

Best regards, WarLord.

Well, with Renaults, that actually makes sense in a double sense. Take out those rubber flaps and send them out to get bread during the rain... they definitely won't come back. icon_surprised.gif icon_surprised.gif icon_lol.gif
