Hi everyone,

I couldn't find an answer to my question even after using the search function, and here's the problem:

I have an AUDI 80 B4 1.9 TDI (manufactured in May 1993) and a speedometer (with a mileage indicator) that has been removed and apparently completely disassembled.
Result: The speedometer is not working, and when it does, it only works sporadically, very rarely. Sometimes, the speedometer needle even stops completely, but this can usually be fixed with a gentle tap. Also, the lighting is not working everywhere, or it is working poorly.

I'm now planning to replace the entire instrument cluster. Since I can't find a well-maintained instrument cluster from a TDI, I wanted to ask if it would cause any major problems to install one from a gasoline-powered car, especially regarding the fuel gauge and tachometer. The speedometer should be fine since it only goes up to 220 km/h!

and please don't scold me if I missed something in the search function!!! icon_redface.gif
Please help me with your tips and suggestions!

Thank you in advance!

Best regards, Mike icon_biggrin.gif

Regarding the Volkswagen Golf 3, I can tell you that all the gasoline engine models have speedometers with different mileage readings (impulse counts), so the speed indication will not be accurate.

As far as I know, TDI diesel engine control modules (ECMs) are not compatible with gasoline engine control modules.

It is often claimed, but it is not true. The speed signals come from the engine control unit (MSG) and not directly from the Hall sensor or similar components (at least, this is the case with the Passat 35i B4). Therefore, a gasoline engine speedometer should also fit into a TDI engine (an American has installed a VR6 speedometer into a TDI, and it worked).

Best regards, WarLord.

I also had a gasoline speedometer in my TDI, and I believe that both of them worked, so the tachometer and the speedometer. I definitely drove around with it for a few days, and I didn't notice anything unusual, except that the preheating light wasn't there.
I can try it again next weekend if there's still interest.

...Of course, assuming that Tribune.Inc is interested. I'm already generating the interest icon_razz.gif icon_wink.gif.

Hi, thanks for your help, and I'd like to know if everything fits! Also, do I need to pay attention to the manufacturing year, or does it not matter regarding the connectors?

Best regards, Mike!!

P.S.: @WarLord... yes, I think that troublesome issue has been resolved. icon_biggrin.gif

Is that a fully electronic speedometer, or does it still have a mechanical linkage?

Best regards, WarLord.

Is that a fully electronic speedometer, or still one with a cable?

Greetings, WarLord.

It is fully electronic!!

Then there shouldn't be anything preventing the exchange from happening.

Best regards, WarLord.

@ Tribune.Inc

I've tried it again, as promised.
Conclusion: WORKS PERFECTLY icon_exclaim.gif
The speedometer and tachometer are both working correctly. The fuel and temperature gauges also seem to be accurate, but the oil pressure light is not shining as brightly, although it is still functioning. icon_cool.gif
So, no talk of different heart rates for different distances or anything like that!

(One was from a 1Z engine and one was from an ABS system (1.8L, 90HP), both were fully electronic.)

Best regards,
Jan.
