I had the same problem with those intermittent errors (sometimes it would even overspeed under full load). I just kept driving. The loader then lasted another 80,000 kilometers. After replacing [the part], everything was fine again.

Regarding vehicles from the year 2002: In this context, we were only discussing the AMF (1.4 TDI) engine. The turbocharger boost control system is different in that engine compared to yours (because it uses a wastegate turbocharger).
And yes, they are all direct-injection engines. However, to my knowledge, the AMF is the only direct-injection engine with a wastegate turbocharger.

Could a faulty mass airflow sensor (MAF) cause these intermittent issues? In my opinion, if the MAF is malfunctioning, it could produce incorrect readings, leading to either too little or too much fuel being injected.

Too little is fine; too much isn't possible because that would require ignoring the torque curve (see specialized articles, e.g., on low-speed high-torque tuning).

These overruns occurred in my vehicle when the engine was running very hot (e.g., driving through the Kassel Hills and accelerating from approximately 100 km/h to almost maximum speed on every incline). Overruns were practically never observed at lower engine temperatures.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be the charger... It probably had a defect from the beginning... but without the chip, it wouldn't have shown any problems.
