Is the air bleed function similar to a wastegate on a VTG turbocharger?

Does anyone recognize this?

My car (with a 4-cylinder ALH engine) makes a loud 'whooshing' noise whenever I abruptly release the accelerator.

When it was new, it was much louder. Now it's gradually getting quieter, and I'm worried that something might be wearing out.

Who knows?

A VTG turbocharger does not have a wastegate due to its design.
If no pressure is required, the guide vanes adjust to a different position.
The whistling sound you're hearing is normal.
I had and still have (AFN 81 kW and ASZ 96 kW).

Hi, I have an AJM engine with a chip, and it whistles too.

Sorry, I may have expressed myself unclearly!

Shake a bottle of cola gently and then open it, and you'll hear it fizz!

It sounds the same whether I abruptly release the accelerator or shift to the next gear.
How is that possible with a VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry) if it doesn't have a release valve?

... I've also heard this noise with my AHF. I heard it again yesterday after about 2-3 months. It seems to come and go constantly.

Best regards, Chris.

Hi Chris!

Finally, someone who understands. icon_biggrin.gif

I've actually always had this noise, but it's been a little quieter lately.
I'm driving today with the Tuneline software (ECU) enabled.
Drove for approximately 1/2 hour (mountain road). icon_twisted.gif icon_twisted.gif icon_twisted.gif

Now, it is once again very loud and noticeable icon_twisted.gif.

It sounds awesome, just like the Blue Golf with its two turbocharged VR6 engines. icon_biggrin.gif

If anyone hasn't seen the video yet, I'd be happy to email it to them icon_lol.gif.
Just send me an email icon_smile.gif.

HI!
I have a 1Z engine that doesn't have a variable turbine geometry (VTG) system, but it does have a wastegate.
How can I make my engine 'hiss'?
I just think the sound is absolutely amazing!!!!! (sorry for the word choice) icon_wink.gif

Thank you and best regards.

Hi Ventoman,

Take a look at the Suspension Supply catalog.
There are replacement wastegates available for racing engines for around €99.

Then you have a beautifully loud peacock icon_twisted.gif.

Best regards from the NOS/Turbo enthusiast.

PS: Let me know when you've managed to do it, I'd be happy to hear from you. icon_biggrin.gif

Thank you for the tip.
I thought that wastegates for racing were only for gasoline turbo engines.

Well, let's see what can be done. 99 euros??? I thought it could be done cheaper.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'MFG' is an abbreviation for 'Mit freundlichen Grüßen,' which means 'Sincerely' or 'Best regards' in English.

Hi!

No, you can get those for a TDI too. *I have already inquired about it icon_twisted.gif*.
Well, maybe you can find it cheaper somewhere else, but I'm afraid I don't know. It's already extremely difficult to get tuning parts here in Austria.
If you happen to get it sometime, and you know where it can be obtained cheaper, please let me know. icon_biggrin.gif

@ wuze60:

Finally, I've found someone who has the same "problem" as I do.
To me, the sound is more like a dull whistling or croaking noise.
Do you know where the noise is coming from now?
"No one at VW knows anything about it. Either no one is listening, or it's considered 'normal'. But no one knows where it's coming from. I mean, it seems to be coming from the left side of the engine compartment."

Since oil is now being pushed out of the boost pressure hoses (as mentioned in my recent post), I'm now concerned that this might not be "normal."

By the way, the noise has been there from the beginning.
I have the impression that the noise occurs less frequently, or is quieter, when the machine is warm.

Hello!
"With my previous car, I never heard this noise. When I converted to a VNT17 turbo, the noise suddenly appeared, and after installing a complete Supersprint exhaust system (single pipe with muffler), it became much louder. I also notice that short bursts of acceleration can produce a whistling sound when the engine returns to idle! I suspect the noise is coming directly from the turbocharger; I can even hear it "singing" at low RPMs (at least, I do)."
Sure, here's the translation:

"gruzz mozz"

The noise is coming from the air filter box!
If you put an open filter on it, it will be even louder.
This is caused by turbulence in the intake air.

The exhaust system creates a certain back pressure, and when you accelerate, the intake air becomes turbulent in the pipes leading to the turbocharger.

If you install a sports exhaust or make even a small change to the exhaust system, the noise will disappear!

I've already tried that!
with sports ESD noise gone / with original ESD back.

Everyone thought I was crazy when I told them about the noise.

Don't worry about it! It's perfectly normal!
also, ich habe auch ein bisschen mit der Förderung von VTG zu tun.
and this is actually adjusted slightly differently in every VW!

Adjust the VTG rod by less than 1 mm, and you'll see that the noise will disappear!

If oil is leaking from the hoses, check the clamps and hose connections to see if they are loose or leaking.
Some washing machines use more detergent than others, while some use almost none.

My intercooler pipes are almost completely dry, even though I use 0W-40 oil, which should theoretically be able to pass through the turbocharger's seals more easily.

PS: For those who are interested, here's where you can find a few videos and sound files of my TDI: http://members.void.at/wuze60/audiovideo.html

Hmmm...

So, based on the sound, the AGR valve is broken icon_wink.gif.

It sounds a bit like a truck, but it has something...

btw: that sharp whistling sound when I quickly release the gas, my ALH also has. It also makes that sound when going from light partial load to full load. It scares passersby icon_twisted.gif.

Hi!

I also had that issue with my ALH (12/9icon_cool.gif. It was permanently resolved by replacing the wastegate valve (?).
As long as no performance loss or similar issues are detected, this whistling is merely an 'acoustic defect.'

My current AWX also has some, but it's barely audible.
