Hello, fellow diesel enthusiasts!

My turbocharger from my Passat 3B with the AFN engine appears to be defective.
Now I was able to acquire another turbocharger, also a VNT-15, from a Golf 4 ALH.
My question: Does this turbocharger even fit my Passat? The exhaust manifold on the (new) turbocharger is completely different, and it can't be easily removed like it is in my car.
"Also, in my case, the vacuum sensor on the VTG goes upwards, while on the other turbocharger from the Golf, it goes downwards... (I guess this is due to space constraints)."

I would be grateful for any help.

Best regards.

G4 ALH is currently a GT17 49 VA with a manifold. Are you sure it's a VNT 15 from the G model? Or is it a part from a Sharan? Do you have the part number handy? icon_wink.gif

Okay, according to the model number, it's a VNT-15. Besides the turbine housing on the exhaust side and the differently installed pressure sensor, the turbochargers are identical.

Can anyone help me with this?
Best regards.

Perhaps. At least, if you would answer Mulle's question:

Regards,
Sure, here's the translation:

"Guste" is a German word that means "gust" or "gust of wind." It can also be used to describe a sudden burst of something, such as laughter or anger.

ALH is a transversely mounted engine. The support bracket on the exhaust housing looks different (rotated 90 degrees) compared to the longitudinally mounted engine. We discussed this just a few months ago...

Are you sure the vacuum sensor is pointing in the 'other' direction, and not towards the compressor housing?

Best regards.

Golf and Co are showing a downward trend in real estate, at least the ASZ Polo today had a price decrease. I think it was a KKK, I need to check again tomorrow. icon_wink.gif

Okay, for the AFN (Ibiza, Seat) models, the canister should be oriented with the opening facing upwards.

Best regards.

Yes, AFN always pointed upwards, as far as I know. It was only later that VW was foolish enough to leave them pointing downwards, where the dirt gets in icon_twisted.gif.

For the sake of completeness (to avoid confusion):

2001 Ibiza ASV - Can up.
2001 Leon ASV - Can upside down.

Or also:
ALH Ibiza 6K: Upgraded.
ALH G4 (similar year of manufacture, if I recall correctly): Can facing downwards.

It could be due to the fact that, with the Ibiza, the can would collide with an engine mount (G3 base?) when positioned facing downwards.

Yes, the engine mounts and:

The Ibiza directs the compressed air upwards, routing it around the engine to the LLK (located beneath the transmission).

Leon/G4 guides them downwards, then directs them to the right, through the town hall's central area, to the side entrance.

The Ibiza directs the compressed air upwards, sending it around the engine once before reaching the intercooler (located under the transmission).

I don't want to come across as a know-it-all, but regarding this...
'The design is something you have to congratulate VW/Seat (?) on. It's definitely about 1-1.5 meters [tall/long/wide].'
The intercooler route was unnecessarily created - and they call this a 'GT' :-/

Best regards.

I don't want to claim that I'm the overly clever know-it-all - but regarding this...
'The design is something you have to congratulate VW/Seat (?) for. It's definitely about 1-1.5 meters

For this, they have a more sensible intercooler design compared to older Ford and PSA engines. In those, the intercooler was mounted on top of the engine, and air was drawn in through a channel between the hood and the interior paneling. As far as I remember, this gap was only about 1-2 cm wide, and you can now imagine how such a design performs when going uphill with little airflow and a heavy load.

...and this design was something the T4 model was able to fully realize.

The T4 TDI also has an oil cooler mounted on the engine (at least the 102 hp version).

"Bastard" because everything about the T4 is different from all other VWs.
I've been taking apart VWs for over 10 years, but the T4 is always a source of frustration and seemingly impossible challenges...
