Hi.
My new used (Golf IV) has a 'U' in the vehicle identification number (... 1JZ2Unnnnnn) which indicates the production facility.
Where is the one that came off the assembly line ?
Thank you and best regards.
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:
'Hati' is a word in the Indonesian language that means 'heart'. It is also a common name in Indonesia.

Sure, no problem.
'U' is therefore Uitenhage/South Africa. Well, that doesn't surprise me, considering the Golf has air conditioning .
Thank you very much for the detailed explanation.

Yes, those are the so-called overproduced models that are offered to German retailers! My dad has one of those models too.

Well, mine won't be the only one that came off the assembly line there. At least, it has the 'U' in the vehicle identification number.
What I would be interested in is the question (or rather, the answer to it) of whether there are quality differences between the individual products. So: is a Golf assembled by highly motivated South Africans worse than a Golf assembled by a dissatisfied German? Ultimately, behind both systems, however different they may be, there is a quality control/final inspection. Well, and whether one worker might have had a bad night's sleep the day before and expressed this dissatisfaction on a few vehicles, that can happen in all production facilities, right?

I can't answer that question directly.
Theoretically, there should be no differences between the production facilities.
But now, let's get to the practical part:
Seven years ago, one of our car radio production lines was relocated from Germany to South Africa. Despite the outdated production methods, the quality of the radios was no worse than that produced in Germany. The customer (BMW) was satisfied.
However, I wouldn't draw any general conclusions from that. Gruß Bertil

South Africa generally has a good reputation, which is quite the opposite of many other countries on the African continent .
