Good day.

I've had many good experiences here before... but I hope someone can help me, although I'm not really sure if anyone will. I don't want to give up on my Gofi, especially since I've now driven it over 300,000 km. Actually, I've done everything I could for him in the last two years: new bearings, new driveshafts, alternator shaft seals, oil changes, etc... People say he's a 'photographer's car' here in Potsdam.

Okay, back to the problem:

In addition, he whistles when attempting to start.

The workshop apologized that they can no longer fix the issue and recommended a new heart (engine) for my Golf. But I don't want to do that; if it's running, it's fantastic – smooth, without any rattling, and with a fuel consumption of only 5.5 liters.

If anyone has experienced this before and found the solution, please let me know.

My diagnosis is that the valve springs are sticking, which prevents proper pressure buildup. Also, it spins very quickly when it doesn't want to. However, there was no timing belt failure. Or does the TD have some kind of overpressure valve on the turbocharger that simply opens? I don't think it's a piston ring issue, nor is it a hole in the piston, because it runs so smoothly and evenly when it's running properly. When I accelerate, it immediately loses power.

Please help with one of his first cars, a 1985 model.

Sincerely, Christian Fetzer.

Enjoy your meal! / Have a good lunch!

Find a reputable workshop or do it yourself.

Regarding your problem:

- Check valve timing.
- Check the ESP setting (start time).
- Measure compression.
- Air in the supply line?
- Does it start more easily when the KSB (Kaltstartsystem/cold start system) is engaged?

Please take the following test:
If it's not starting up properly (like it is now), try disconnecting the temperature sensor plug.
"That's the preheating relay; it's located on the right side, near the water inlet on the cylinder head, if you're looking at it from the front."
Since the preheating relay is no longer receiving temperature information, it remains active and continues to heat up.
Does it start now with preheating?
If that's the case, then the compression is no longer sufficient.
I can't think of anything about that whistle right away; can you figure out where it comes from?

I don't know what the legal situation is, but normally a car should not be left unattended in a repair shop.
"It was poorly assembled and the workshop is actually responsible for fixing the shoddy workmanship."

If the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) was not properly calibrated, it could also have caused incorrect timing belt adjustments.
"If it's misaligned, even just one or two teeth on the camshaft being off can cause problems with the engine."
It failed to start on the first attempt and made a loud noise.

I've already tried everything, and even the starter isn't the problem. VW themselves have given up. I suspect it might be the valve system, but that wouldn't make sense because the engine turns over easily when it doesn't want to start. When I bought it, I was told that it had low compression, but this only became noticeable during cold starts. I also considered the possibility of being a tooth off on the timing, but VW would have told me if that were the case. The glow plug relay is also not the issue; it's a custom-built unit and can be switched on manually, so it can be ruled out.

The ignition timing and camshaft setting might be slightly misadjusted.
"I also experienced this after replacing the timing belt! I can't imagine it being caused by sticking valves. If your Golf was manufactured BEFORE 10/85, it has tappets, and you need to adjust the valve clearance. Check the valve clearance, as the valves expand when the engine is warm."

hello,
Was your Golf running well before the visit to the workshop?
If that's the case, then someone cut corners!
Most likely, the timing of the tax period and the start of the funding are no longer aligned, as mentioned before.
The whistling sound could be caused by a too-tight timing belt.
