Disassembling a Passat transmission

Removing and disassembling the gearbox/transmission.

The left side of the gearbox (manual 5-speed) on my Passat 1.9 TDI (81kw) needs to be resealed (the part where the driveshaft passes through).

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to remove the component, even though I've loosened all the screws. It seems like there's a major issue here. Has anyone else attempted to work on this gearbox before? If so, how do you disassemble it?
