Hello specialists,

I recently had the faulty turbocharger replaced in my A6 Avant quattro tiptronic (3/99) with AFB engine (142,000 km) about 2 weeks ago.

Afterwards, the performance (and the smoke when accelerating strongly) was normal.

However, I have now noticed that with a warm engine and when releasing the accelerator, the car occasionally emits a blue smoke cloud for a few seconds, after which it disappears. If I press the accelerator while the smoke is present, it disappears (for the duration of the accelerator being pressed). icon_confused.gif

As mentioned, the problem only occurs sporadically (e.g., once every 5-10 km); performance, noise, and fuel consumption are normal; therefore, I have already taken the car to the dealer twice (they only replaced the fuel pump, which was also replaced just 9 months ago - no change), and they are also at a loss.

Could it be that the oil that entered the exhaust system due to the turbo damage is still being 'burned off' (the dealer said they had cleaned the exhaust manifold after the turbo replacement)? icon_rolleyes.gif

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Novel

P.S.: Is there a diagram of the AFB motor (with all the solenoid valves, etc.) available online anywhere?

If this wasn't the case before the repair, I can think of 3 things:

- Problems with the crankcase ventilation, the search function finds a lot of information on this topic.
- How did the old turbocharger die? Could fragments have damaged the cylinder walls or valves/valve guides?
- Errors during the repair. Dirt in disconnected fuel lines, incorrect timing, etc.

If the car wasn't making any unusual noises before the repair, I expect the workshop to be responsible for fixing it.

The new turbocharger could also have been installed incorrectly, and therefore may already be partially damaged (giving it full throttle immediately after installation, without proper filling with engine oil and without waiting for the normal oil supply from the engine to be established).

Similarly, the seal on the 'new' turbocharger may be defective. Is it really 'new'? Check!

Best regards, Rainer

He had been making a lot of noise before the repair (also a blue color), because the turbo was faulty (apparently, oil had leaked into the system due to the faulty turbo).

These are good starting points... I have an appointment at the workshop next week...let's see what the mechanic thinks...and what happened to the old turbo.

Hallo

Quote:

Autobahn: 140 km/h

Tempomat-Fahrt: alles im grünen Bereich;

Post10-10-2003, 16:45    Subject: Audi A6 3/99 AFB: Occasional smoking after turbocharger replacement Translating...

Hello everyone,

I'm following this thread with great interest, and I'm very eager to know if and how the problem has been resolved (as I myself am experiencing a similar issue).

It would be very helpful if the person who is experiencing the problem could post an update on the status.

Best regards,

Post23-12-2004, 20:52    Subject: Oil mist separator Quote

Finally, the oil mist separator was replaced during my AFB inspection, as it was clearly clogged and causing the overpressure valve to periodically open towards the exhaust system.

Since the replacement (autumn 2003), everything has been working perfectly (apart from the non-pressurized gas springs in the trunk, but that's a different issue...). icon_wink.gif )

Best regards,
Roman
