It appears there are no older 1.2 or 1.4 liter diesel engines that are mounted longitudinally (running front-to-back) in front-wheel-drive vehicles and have the transmission attached to the rear.

Okay, I'll pass that information along for now, and the renovation plans are off.
A 1.6 diesel engine is (allegedly) too heavy and too large, and is therefore excluded.

Too heavy, okay, but too big?
The 827 was originally a 1.3-liter engine (see https://community.dieselschrauber.org/en/viewtopic.php?t=4856).).
I wouldn't rely on the engine displacement, but rather on the block size. The 827 is an extremely compact engine (the engine block itself is less than 40cm).
My Simca 1.1 engine (which had the same block as the Renault 12) was significantly larger.

It was supposedly supposed to be available from model year 1995 that Dacia would offer diesel engines (allegedly even from VW).

I'm also not familiar with a 1870cc engine from VW. It's probably a Peugeot engine. However, there's a pickup version of this vehicle that's a diesel... is that the basis for the Renault 12? Or did they modify it themselves? The possible rear-wheel drive suggests an older engine design, and it looks that way in the drawings too.
He probably has to weld 15cm onto the front of the Renault 12.
