I'm having a problem with my air intake. I have an open funnel on it, there's no room for an airbox, and the funnel is located quite low on the tire. When it rains (like today), it sucks in an insane amount of water, starts to choke, loses power, and makes a terrible noise.

'When the weather is dry, I experience this problem: when I'm in 4th or 5th gear, in the turbo's boost range, and I release the accelerator and then reapply it, the turbo doesn't kick in again for 3-4 seconds.'
I think it's all because of that stupid funnel, but another one doesn't fit.
What should I do???
Regards,
Sneezy.

What kind of car was that? A 6N with an AFN engine?

'I can finally get rid of this junk, and the VR6 one fits in my car.'

Arne.

Hi Arne,

Okay, it was a 6N engine with an AFN injection system from an Ibiza. I might look into finding a smaller funnel and building a box around it. Then, I'll run a 6-8cm hose into the wheel arch.

Sneezy.

'Well, Bosch will be happy. They're always happy to sell mass airflow sensors.'
Seriously: People at VAG get paid a lot of money to design the intake system in such a way that rainwater doesn't get sucked in, or even water itself. And you're undoing all of that work...

How about the original Luftkasten? It seems your 'funnel' doesn't really do anything except cause problems...

@Gremlin

'As far as I know, the AFN was never included in the 6N model, so it's likely a conversion. It's also understandable that the original intake manifold often can't be retained during such a conversion. Therefore, it's important to read carefully before criticizing someone's work. (My opinion).'

@schnupfi

The idea with the bucket is certainly not bad; it has been implemented before. If you're looking for suggestions, you might want to check out this website:

http://www.cp-tuning.de/frankgti/eima.htm

He has spent a long time researching open air filters and thermal improvements, so there might be something interesting for you there. However, all of this was applied to a Golf GTI, until the Golf was involved in a fatal accident. Maybe it will work for you too, or at least you'll learn things that you would otherwise have to experiment with for a long time.

Hi Christian,

You're right, it's impossible to keep the original air filter housing during this conversion. To make space for the funnel, I had to modify the front bracket.
On Tom's website, www.vw-page.at, specifically on page 4 of the 'Show'n'Shine Polo 6N' section, you can see the engine bay of 'Schnupfi's Polo.'

I'm not really thrilled about the funnels either, but I don't have any other option.

'I solved the problem yesterday. I pulled the splash guard in the wheel well down about 20cm and secured it, so no more water gets through. I also installed a metal plate underneath, and nothing gets through there either. I just hope it still gets enough air. By the way, I thoroughly washed the air intake with a steam cleaner and then dried it; it looks brand new. Then I also replaced the mass airflow sensor (MAF sensor) – I had a spare one lying around.'
Result: Improved acceleration, the problem in the 4th/5th gear with the delay is gone, faster turbo response (it feels like it's almost at full boost at idle icon_biggrin.gif), it feels like it has 15 horsepower more.

'The problem that Frank (your link) is experiencing, I also had with my VR6 Polo. Fortunately, with the diesel, the filter isn't directly in the engine compartment, but next to the power steering pump, right under the bumper. So, I would have to cut the bumper and install a perforated metal sheet.'

Regards,
Sneezy.
