Hello,

I once asked in the old forum if it might be possible to replace the 5-speed gearbox (EBF) in my Golf (81kW AHF) with a 6-speed gearbox.
'At the time, Rainer told me to get back to him and let him know how it was driving, because he thinks the gear ratio in the VW's engine/transmission combination is a bit too short.'
I decided to skip the one with the 6-speed transmission because of the high costs icon_rolleyes.gif.
'I'm getting a longer 5th gear installed on Monday, just like some others in this forum have done. I also got the part numbers for the two gears from the forum.'
If any of you are certain about something, like in this example:

/viewtopic.php?p=1684&highlight=

If what Diesel Götte describes doesn't actually work, please let me know, because I'm not going to have my transmission disassembled unnecessarily.

Incidentally, the question about the speed of the VPE is misleading, as I was led astray by the two answers 'half the camshaft speed' and 'double the camshaft speed'... after all, the pump is connected to the timing belt for the camshaft drive icon_exclaim.gif.
But the gear of the pump and the gear of the camshaft are both roughly the same size...

new_tomato.gif they have exactly the same number of teeth, otherwise the injection timing would shift relative to the valve timing.

Best regards, Rainer.

I have the long fifth gear installed on my 81kW TDI.

Okay, so what can I say... it's the transmission from the 90 HP Gold - I believe the model code is GKB, which is ASD. In any case, the part numbers from the other thread are included with the transmission. I checked today, and it reaches 225 km/h (according to the speedometer) up to the redline - which is 4550-4600 RPM.

I'm not sure if the effort/money is really worth it. Do you have a chip installed? Theoretically, it should add 5-7 km/h. I had it done back then because I needed a new transmission anyway. The gear ratio is simply not long enough yet... but I think there aren't any other relatively inexpensive 'longer' alternatives for the Golf 3.

It would be interesting to significantly extend the overall gear ratio (axis) and thus increase the speed of each gear. I find that changing to a different gearset or using larger wheels would not be as effective. The question, of course, is what that would cost. Does anyone have any experience with this? Where/how is it manufactured at VW for front-wheel drive vehicles? Is it a combination of a gear and a bevel gear?
(AMF Lupo: 190 km/h at 4200 RPM, with standard tires)

Okay, I don't think that's a very good idea, because first, it would also extend the first gear and the reverse gear, and second, you would lose acceleration in all gears.
I think it's probably most sensible to just extend the 5th gear, or alternatively, have a 6-speed gearbox with a completely different gear ratio.

I completely agree with you. Starting with the clutch definitely puts a strain on it. But once the vehicle is moving, a 'mobile' first gear, or a second gear that allows speeds of 80-90 mph, could be a lot of fun. In third gear, you could easily overtake trucks on country roads, and at 170 mph, you can shift into fifth, and it still pulls strongly. The question is, can 'our' torque monsters and their components handle that?
best regards, j.
