Golf 4 Problems: Troubleshooting & Fixes

I retrofitted a GRA (Gearbox Retrofit Adapter) to my Golf IV (0603/422, TDI, 81 KW, first registration: 30.01.2001, engine ASV, engine control unit "1.9l R4 EDC G700SG 2807", VAG part number: "038 906 012 AP") and activated it using VAG-Com. It's the original VAG cruise control switch with the rocker switch and a 5-pin wiring harness (connected to the Srecker T10 connector in the water box: blue T10e/1, red/yellow T10e/2, black/yellow T10e/3, white T10e/9, and black/blue terminal 15 in the fuse box).

The green cruise control indicator light is illuminated on the tachometer, but I can't seem to get the cruise control to work.

Reading the data block 006 using VAG-Com yielded the following result:
000000 (from left to right)
1. Clutch.
2. Brake.
3. Set.
4. Sure. Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.
5. ???? (is always "0")
6. Slide switch: GRA On/Off.

All switches are functioning and displayed in VAG-Com. I have a Sharan from 1998 with the old GRA switch without a rocker. The only difference to the Golf in measuring block 006 is that the bit labeled "???" is also "1" when the GRA is activated. It briefly goes to "0" when the sliding switch is pushed all the way towards "Off" to deactivate the cruise control. I suspect that this signal is missing in the Golf, which prevents the GRA from being activated. The new switch also has a middle position on the on/off switch, but this has no effect on measuring block 006.

My only thought right now is: Could the old switch possibly fit in my Golf? What other possibilities are there? I can't think of anything else at the moment.

Yes, the one without the rocker switch, the one with the "Set" button, will fit.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the rocker switch would work in your case. If you bought a retrofit kit, there should definitely be an instruction manual included. However, in my manual, the connector was incorrectly labeled, showing where the contacts are supposed to be inserted.

I have an older Golf IV (1998, 66kW ALH) and I was also able to install the new switch with the rocker without any problems.

The new switch should be compatible.

However, the switch I had purchased in the retrofit kit was defective from the start, and the workshop had to replace it.

Did you definitely activate it in the MSG system?

The bit that is always 0 is suspicious.

I double-checked the pin configuration in connector 10e, and it turns out that the white cable was plugged in incorrectly.
