EPB Passat 3C error

Hello everyone,

The yellow and red warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster. If the EPB button is pressed and held, the red light will begin to blink for the duration of the press. Autoscan file below.
"After the motor seized, I replaced both of them. Subsequently, I also replaced the button from the dealer and the control unit. I also replaced both connectors. The errors still persist." Fuses all replaced.
Follow the RossTech Wiki instructions for adaptation. However, the last step: "Coding the control unit for the parking brake is not working." Does this require setting up access permissions first? It may be necessary to perform a basic adjustment of the parking brake.
I don't have the specific instructions for the Passat, but in principle, it should work like this:
- Brake released;
- Ignition on;
- Clear errors in the ECU (Engine Control Unit);
- Select the "basic setting" function (in my case, this is function 006, but it may be different on other models and can be accessed via the actuator diagnosis).
- Perform initial setup.

The problem is that the error cannot be deleted; it's also dated back to October 2016, which is when the issues started.

What I've also noticed is that when the key is removed and I press the button, it lights up, as does the red indicator light on the instrument cluster.

Try this:

• Turn off the ignition.
• Disconnect the battery.
• Wait at least 5 minutes before reconnecting the battery.
• Turn on the ignition.
• While pressing the brake pedal, press the switch twice (ON-OFF).

Tip:
Wait 30 seconds between each activation of the EPB switch to allow the parking brake to respond.
Once EPB cycling is complete: Read and clear fault memory.

After that, perform the basic adjustments in the correct order.

I'm getting the wiring diagrams today, and my friend is going to remove the center console so we can start troubleshooting.

Problem found: The connector from the EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) control unit was disconnected, and it was leaking oil. Two contacts were corroded, so we cleaned them as much as possible using a fiberglass pen, removed all the oil, and then sprayed the entire connector with contact cleaner. The brake is now working as it should.

I don't understand the issue with the oil. Are there also problems here, like with Daimler, where oil is drawn into the wiring harnesses via capillary action?

Update: The error has reappeared. We are now sourcing a different EPB control unit and a complete connector from a salvage yard.

Does anyone know where to get those small crimp connectors in the open market? VW apparently charges €14 for one with a 20cm wire attached .

Could it be possible that what's inside the plug isn't oil, but rather electrolyte from ruptured capacitors?
Or, if it was actually oil, it's probably also in the engine control unit (ECU). Just take a look inside, if possible.

"It seems like a lot of oil leaked out, and it couldn't possibly all be from just a few condenser cores. The control unit seems to be intact, but there's a contact problem. When I wiggle the connector, the warning lights suddenly go out."

Unfortunately, opening the control unit is currently not possible because it uses a type of Torx screw with 5 sides instead of the usual 6.

The control unit is on its way. It cost 30 euros, and the connector cost 10 euros. I'll let you know when there's more news.

The day before yesterday, we removed the "bad" pins from the connector housing and replaced them with pins from an eBay connector. One of them was completely corroded and likely caused all the problems. There was also corrosion on the copper wire inside, so we had to cut back quite a bit until we had verschandeln copper.

Then I connected the replacement control unit, connected it to the battery, and turned on the ignition. This resulted in a flurry of warning lights on the instrument cluster: MSG, EPB, ABS, ESP, steering... The main cause was that the ABS/ESP control unit had lost its coding, for reasons unknown. I then took the coding from the last diagnostic report and, one by one, programmed each control unit until the lights eventually went out.

"But it was only temporary, then the "parking brake error" message reappeared. The diagnostic tool also showed a problem with the auto-hold system and a short circuit. I quickly disabled the auto-hold function so that we could go to the vehicle inspection (TÜV) on Monday without any worries, as it was already due in January 2017."
