If, purely hypothetically, one were to deactivate the AGR system as described in Ulf's article, should a control unit reset be performed to adapt the engine electronics to the changed conditions?
I once read that the engine control unit (ECU) can be reset to its default values by disconnecting the battery, and then it starts a new 'learning process.'
Based on general experience, a reset is probably not necessary.
Furthermore, I doubt whether the TDI engine control unit (at least from the 1Z / AHU / AFN models) can actually be reset by disconnecting the battery: it doesn't have a constant power connection, and therefore wouldn't even register the disconnection.
