Hi there,
While this isn't strictly a diesel-related issue, perhaps someone has a tip that could prevent me from having to pry off the door panel.

Problem with my wife's car: The exterior door handle seems to be detached, or at least it's not activating the unlocking mechanism. The child safety lock is engaged, so the door also can't be opened from the inside. How can I access the locking mechanism without causing damage, or at least open the door enough to remove the interior panel?

Volkswagen Passat Variant 35i, manufactured in February 1996.

Regards,
Olli.

Hi Olli,

I think you're in a difficult situation. Unfortunately, I can't recall from memory how easy it is to access the six cross-head screws (three on the left and three on the right) when the door is closed, but that's your only chance. The exterior doorknob is secured with a large cross-head screw, which you can only reach when the door is open.
Perhaps it's possible to manipulate the locking mechanism by inserting a thick wire through the hole in the door pin, as the mechanics of the doorknob also 'push from above.' It's difficult to explain properly; I still have a visual image of it because I recently disassembled and re-lubricated the doorknob mechanism this past weekend.

Hi Olli, You could try bending a piece of wire so that you can push the locking mechanism down through the door gap. It's best to try this on the other side first, and then create a mirrored version of the wire.
Alternatively, you can push the lever down from inside the window frame, which is normally done by the handle. For this as well, you will need to bend a piece of wire into shape.

Hi there,
Thank you for the tips.
I was wondering if there's a way to access the child safety lock lever from the outside (in case the door can then be opened from the inside).
But the idea of using a wire from above is also worth trying.
I will then report on the success or failure of the endeavor.

Regards,
Olli.

Hi there,
Thank you again for the tips; the door is working again icon_smile.gif.
Ultimately, I used a piece of welding wire to push the child safety lock lever into the unlocked position from the inside. However, it probably would have worked just as well to pry it open with a piece of metal from above, next to the window seal.
I found it interesting that the mounting screws for the door handle on the passenger side have a left-hand thread (which wasn't the case with the 32B, for example).
The cause was relatively easy to find: a tension sleeve that holds the unlocking lever of the door handle at the bottom had rusted away; thankfully, Lopez icon_sad.gif.
I'm starting to seriously wonder if I should switch to using Japanese rice cookers. At least they still invest a tiny fraction of a cent in the surface treatment of those parts.

Regards,
Olli.
