Intake Manifold Funnel: Expert Advice

Hello everyone.

In many vehicles (though mostly naturally aspirated gasoline engines), I have noticed an air flow restrictor (a narrow section in the intake manifold).

My question is: does removing the funnel or replacing it with a pipe that fits the rest of the intake manifold have any (positive) effect?
