I used to have an 86 engine in my Golf. Now I have a 90 replacement engine. Some parts have been modified over the years.
The engine is not drawing in any diesel fuel. |

Are +12V present? Does the valve switch?

Do the newer models have their own diesel pump to draw fuel from the tank?
I'm not aware of that!?!

No, but all-wheel-drive models are supposed to have an electric pump in the tank because the tank is divided into two sections, and otherwise it wouldn't be able to be emptied.
The fuel injection pump should definitely be able to draw fuel on its own. Gear oil bottles have a snorkel.
Fill a bottle of gear oil with biodiesel and connect the snorkel to the pump's inlet.
Place the return hose into a (clean) glass.
Then, simultaneously start the infusion and the engine. If sufficient fuel (under pressure) comes out of the return line, you've succeeded.
Best regards, Rainer.
