Airbag Error: Causes and Solutions

I've had the following error in the memory for a week now, and it won't go away.

STG Part Number: 1C0 909 606A
BdV: 27 Airbag vw51 01 02

"One error found:"

000588 - Airbag inflator (driver side) (N95)
32-00: Resistance value too high.

I suspect that the coil spring or the slip ring is defective. Has anyone had experience with this type of failure, or does anyone know the exact error code?

I just wanted to give a quick feedback. So, in my case, it was the tension spring. After the installation, I only had to retrain the ESP, and that was it. Now everything is working again.

I also strongly suspect that the clockspring is broken: there's a sudden clicking sound when steering, and the airbag warning light comes on.

Is this part available separately as a replacement part? Did you replace it yourself? Is there anything special to consider when doing so (besides the usual precautions like disconnecting the airbag battery)?

If the vehicle has ESP (Electronic Stability Program), then a basic alignment of the steering angle must be performed afterwards.
If the sensors are faulty, your ESP/ABS light will turn on.
Without ESP, it's easier. Remove the airbag, lower the steering wheel (it's best to mark its original position beforehand), remove the cover on the steering column, and then unscrew the unit and carefully disconnect the connectors.

Thanks for the instructions. I don't have ESP (Electronic Stability Program) in my car, so I just need to remove the steering wheel. I actually thought the coil spring unit could be removed from the inside (meaning the steering wheel stays in place, and only the airbag unit is removed).

By the way, how does it work when reconnecting the battery? I heard that when installing a new airbag unit, the ignition needs to be turned on before reconnecting the battery (i.e., the ignition switch must be in position I). Does that also apply when reconnecting the same unit?

This has nothing to do with a new car; it's purely a safety feature to prevent you from being stuck behind the wheel if the car suddenly breaks down.

If the steering wheel is turned a full rotation to one side, it is still straight. If you now install the steering column spring in the center position and then start driving and steering, you'll hear a "crack" and 180 Euros will be wasted.
