Hello everyone,

I've been having a problem for a few days now, where my airbag warning light is on. According to VAG-COM error '00589 - Ignition 1 for airbag (driver's side) - N131 resistance value too high'.
Since I personally prefer not to work on the airbag system, I took it to the Audi workshop.
Result: Passenger side airbag unit must be replaced. Cost: approx. 800 EUR.

However, since I have already spoken with the Bosch service and with someone from the Audi Neckarsulm service, and both believe that it is probably more likely due to the control unit (based on their experience), I don't know what to do now.
Airbag and control unit have almost the same price. As a third possibility, corrosion or a broken pipe also comes into consideration.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Or are there perhaps any experiences or opinions on this?

I would be grateful for any information.

Greetings
Christof

PS: It's an Audi A3 8L TDI, 1999 model year.

Search Function!

I had a problem with the passenger airbag. The issue was a poor connection of the connector under the seat.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything using the search function.

And what is that plug under the seat for? And how will this affect the airbag deployment from the passenger airbag?

I'm almost inclined to believe that it's a case of corrosion damage.

As you can see, I have an A4. The airbag light was on in cold weather (below +5°C) -> went to the dealership -> resistance value too high (but I don't remember exactly which one) -> diagnosis: faulty control unit -> 50% warranty = 400€ -> no thanks, then I don't care about the airbag. Since I couldn't relax, I searched through the forums and found that some people had found a problem with the connectors. So I did that, I removed all the connectors under the seat, put them all back in, reset, and it was fine. That's almost 3 years ago now, and they haven't come back -> 0€ !!!
If the resistance value is too high, this can of course be anything, from the ignition switch to the control unit, but one should start with the cheapest and simplest errors: the connectors are still the weakest part of the electrical system. Even the control units are not that bad, as all those that are being replaced are actually broken.

Thanks for the information!
Then I will take the time over the weekend to remove the dashboard trim and measure the resistance of the wiring.
Hopefully, it's just a matter of a faulty plug or a broken cable.
Maybe I can also test a new control unit without having to buy it immediately.

You know that, once you've found the error, the light won't automatically go out; it needs to be reset using VAG-Com or the icon_smile.gif.
You should also be careful with the adjustments so that you don't trigger the airbag. While I'm not an expert, I've read about this somewhere.

Start by disconnecting the connectors under the passenger seat. Gently push the connectors together to create a bit of resistance, then reset. Be careful to push the connectors together precisely, otherwise you will completely bend the contacts, which happened to me. If not, then there are still connectors on the A-column (according to my friend).

Good luck

However, you should also note that the A3 does not have a seat occupancy control, meaning that the cables on the seat are exclusively for the side airbag.
And deleting errors is no problem, with VAG-COM. I have also already tried that. Thought it might be a one-time mistake, but it didn't work.

@chris2605x

Just disconnect the airbag and install a resistor, say 2-3 Ohms.
Exactly like for airbag deactivation (but it also works with a normal 2.2 Ohm resistor)
Then just delete the remaining errors, and if it comes back, you'll know your airbag is okay. The error is either in the control unit or in the wiring. If no further errors are detected, it is either the connector or the airbag itself.
That allows you to at least encircle it.

Okay, now, to conclude, a brief update.

After I had spoken to a few people and everyone said that it was likely a problem with the engine control unit based on their experience, I went to Audi and had a different engine control unit installed for testing purposes. And, as it turned out, the problem is gone. And this has been going on for almost 2 weeks.

And the good thing about the story is, the control unit is under warranty (Audi Carlife Plus). The airbag.

Thank you again to everyone!

Greetings
Christof
