It's usually exactly the same, but with VW, the part number is just stamped... Regarding the AGR valves manufactured by Pierburg, some of the valves are sold with a VAG number, while others are sold in the free market with a smooth-cut, unidentifiable number. Although smoothing is definitely more labor-intensive, the part is cheaper when purchased on the open market...
I personally purchase everything that Pierburg directly offers, and now only through wholesalers, so I can only support this.
