Hi.

It's about a Touran manufactured in 2006 with the 90 hp TDI "BRU" engine.

When the engine is properly warm, the starter motor stops working.
It's smoking and smelling like electricity.

Everything is okay when it's cold.

My analysis idea was:
- If it doesn't start and doesn't click when you try to start it, it will be the magnetic switch.
- If it clicks, but doesn't turn, it's more likely the starter motor itself}.

Am I right about that?

Greetings.

Yes, if the starter motor receives enough power.

Okay, please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.

The box can be surprisingly easily pushed across a meadow by two people icon_wink.gif.

It clicks when it's having another "phase" and doesn't want to turn.
It seems like a significant amount of power is flowing.

I now believe that it's not the temperature, but a specific resting position that's causing the problem. If he stays "there," it won't work the next time.

The thing is coming out, and then hopefully everything will be alright.

Hmm... that reminds me of that clearly defective dual-mass flywheel.
It wasn't as if that would have affected the starter motor, so how could it possibly have done so?

Once you've removed the starter motor, you can inspect its pinion gear. If, for some reason, any loose parts have ever gotten between the gears, you should be able to see it. Otherwise, I can't imagine that the dual-mass flywheel (ZMS) has anything to do with it.

Apparently, Bosch and Valeo components were used together, as the parts catalog in the BRU system lists both brands with different part numbers.

Can you swap them out, meaning can you remove the BOSCH part and replace it with a Valeo part (if you can get one at a good price)?

That should fit. I also replaced a Valeo starter with a Bosch starter (Passat 3C from 2007) a few weeks ago.

Hello,

I'm not sure how the starter shaft is mounted on the clutch side, but I want to mention that in a very old 1.6D engine (swirl chamber), the starter shaft was housed in a bearing bush located in the clutch bell.

The bearing bush was worn out/broken, which caused the starter motor to occasionally not engage its pinion gear with the flywheel ring gear, but instead to push it *onto* the ring gear. In the latter case, the starter motor would either partially block or damage the ring gear.

-> Check the starter shaft and ring gear for damaged teeth, paying particular attention to the area where they engage with the flywheel.

Best regards, Rainer.

The starter motor should be self-supporting, meaning it should not be guided or supported by the transmission.

I suspect there's a defect in one of the windings or on the commutator. If it gets stuck in that specific position, it will simply stop working.

Based on the most recent cancellations, that was my assumption as well.

Meanwhile, the starter motor stopped working altogether.
Just a "click" from the magnetic switch.

The shaft has approximately 2mm of play laterally.

It probably isn't worth trying to fix it, is it?

It's starting again.

ATP's new, low-cost part is now locked.
The Plus power shoe didn't fit perfectly; a protrusion on the starter motor was in the way.
With a little bit of adjustment (to the cable), there's no problem.

The new starter is surprisingly quiet, and the BRU starts up incredibly fast, as is typical for a 1.9-liter engine.

I'm curious to see how long he lasts. icon_eek.gif

As a family car with 260,000 km on the odometer, it still has some life left in it icon_smile.gif.
