How long does it take for the engine to start misfiring or shutting down?
Is the time until the engine fails always the same?

Can the decay be prevented if you tamper with the gas?

Another idea: Perhaps the problem isn't with the motor or the control unit after all?

"On my A3 8L, I once had a faulty fuse box near the battery. The resulting electrical problems in the vehicle's wiring system led to approximately 30 horsepower less than usual and an emergency mode while driving, even though the power supply to the engine control unit (ECU) was not affected by the relevant fuse circuit!"

Best regards, Rainer.

However, this only applies to the idle speed.

"No, when I received the vehicle, it was supposedly not running at all. After I bled the fuel system (the previous owner had even bypassed the diesel filter!), it started immediately, and ran for about 20 minutes with intermittent misfires. Then, it only started sporadically..."

Negative - it has absolutely no influence.

That was also something I considered. However, the length of the component would place it just below the WSS on the left side, and the engine control unit (ECU) is located there as well. The crimp connectors that are in there are all okay, there are no signs of water damage, and the ground connection is solid icon_sad.gif.

Aha... the 2.0 16V TDI engine in the Touran, which had those problems, always sputtered during the warm-up phase at idle - sometimes to the point of stalling. A correction to a few maps, or characteristic curves, provided relief. When you look at it, you might think that the engineers intentionally programmed an oscillator there icon_lol.gif.

Okay, now the problem is solved icon_smile.gif.

Engine control unit replaced, now it's running again.

Inside was a 016 FE, and the exchange control unit has the identifier 016 SX.

The software version of device 016FE was 7002, while the software version of device 016SX is 9820.

Hmm... then it seems that the old MSG has recently developed a hardware defect?

Because a software bug likely would have been driving the driver to despair for at least five years.

"@ulf: Not necessarily. The 2.0 16V TDI that I fixed the idle problems on back then only started exhibiting those issues due to wear and tear."

It is certain that this hardware error has already driven a VAG authorized workshop to despair (they replaced all sorts of things, even bypassed the fuel filter (!), etc.).

So, rather a software issue that is incompatible with wear and tear, which allows the hardware to function properly within narrow component tolerances?

That's exactly how my stuttering, starting BUK seems to me icon_rolleyes.gif.
