Good news from my end as well. I finally got around to replacing the regulator today.
Luckily, my original Valeor controller fits.
It had a replica controller with a strangely shaped heatsink.
By the way, the old regulator was not properly screwed onto the two relevant screws that it should have been connected to in order to conduct electricity.
Whether screwing it in would have fixed the problem didn't matter to me; I preferred to have an original regulator working inside.
Now the starter motor is working perfectly!
The voltage is like the old Lima generator, at 14V, and it stays there.
No sawing or flickering!
Replacing the regulator was quite straightforward, and thanks to the newly installed carbon brush retainer, there were no problems when installing it either.
Then let's see how long the third one lasts.
