I now have a Bosch 140A alternator installed, and it's working perfectly. By the way, I took pictures of both alternators from the back for those interested, including anyone who wants to see them during their lunch break. The Bosch regulator that's installed here has the connector in the same position on the edge of the housing, but the difference is clearly visible.
I submitted the Valeo Lima headlights for warranty today. Please keep your fingers crossed that it goes through successfully.

I think you won't have any more problems with the Bosch product.
Do you happen to have a part number so I can order a Bosch replacement in advance?
And of course, we're rooting for you! icon_biggrin.gif

Sure. See the image. It's a 140A Lima alternator from a Passat BGW, with a free-running pulley that has 5 grooves.

Yes, definitely.
Why are you surprised by that? The originally installed 120A Valeo starter also had one. The defective Remy starter did as well.

Well, I'm surprised because the parts list for the V6 Lima doesn't include any free-running hubs.
I've been looking into this myself because I suspect that the missing free-running clutch, combined with the Tiptronic transmission, might be causing the LIMAs to fail.
That would be easy to clarify if you had a photo of the other side of the Bosch device.

Yes, it definitely looks like a free-range system.
Then I'll start looking for one right away! icon_wink.gif

Okay, now I understand. It's for the 4-cylinder TDI engine.
I was talking about the one in the V6.

Great!
Good news from my end as well. I finally got around to replacing the regulator today.
Luckily, my original Valeor controller fits.
It had a replica controller with a strangely shaped heatsink.
By the way, the old regulator was not properly screwed onto the two relevant screws that it should have been connected to in order to conduct electricity.
Whether screwing it in would have fixed the problem didn't matter to me; I preferred to have an original regulator working inside.
Now the starter motor is working perfectly! icon_biggrin.gif
The voltage is like the old Lima generator, at 14V, and it stays there.
No sawing or flickering!
Replacing the regulator was quite straightforward, and thanks to the newly installed carbon brush retainer, there were no problems when installing it either.
Then let's see how long the third one lasts. icon_wink.gif
