Okay, let's not dwell on all the potential problems with this old car. There was or is a vacuum issue in the tank, possibly related to a loss of power, and starting problems when the engine is cold. Nevertheless, the car, including the engine, passed the technical inspection eight weeks ago, and is now heading to Sweden.
Sure, here's the translation:

"Best regards," or "Sincerely,".
Herbert.

Hi!

Oh, yes, the issue of the ESP running out of power is also a concern. I didn't think of that right away.
I've installed check valves in fuel lines in emergency situations like that before.
For older, well-worn T4s, this sometimes helped them last up to 100,000 km until the end of their lifespan.
There's a check valve at VW that's originally installed in a T3 with a gasoline engine.
It is fuel-resistant, and based on experience, the flow rate is also sufficient.
Grüße, Steffen!

The problem with the fuel ventilation seems to be solved. The car is already rolling towards Sweden.
There's no point in speculating about what else might be missing from the engine. If there are any more problems, the driver will let us know, and we'll get it running again.

Hello everyone!

@HerBärt: The problem is NOT solved, not even seemingly, or were you able to discern Spati's resolution/conclusion between the lines?
He "wrote" that the vehicle is currently out of his reach and that he will provide further feedback later.

And it stays open like this for so long! *grumble*

Spati started the thread and is old/mature enough to close it again, if necessary, and in a way that is appropriate. icon_rolleyes.gif

Best regards from Munich!

I had been communicating with Herbert via private message throughout the day, and I would have been able to accept the temporary closure.

Last night, I received a text message: the Passat, along with its passengers and luggage, has arrived in northern Sweden. Cleaning the fuel tank cap helped – the hissing sound when opening it is gone, and it now starts after about 4-5 seconds. It's better than before, but not as good as I would expect from newer vehicles. The daytime temperatures around -7 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures around -16 degrees Celsius haven't stopped it, it's still running. It's not far from reaching 700,000 kilometers. That milestone will be reached during a ski trip in a few days.

Hello Spati!

Personally, I don't believe the fuel cap is the (main) cause, however, the 4-5 seconds of engine running time at temperatures between -16°C and -7°C (possibly also due to a faulty glow plug system?) seems quite acceptable considering the extremely high mileage.

Decide yourself whether you want to close this topic as resolved or not.

Best regards from Munich!
