Hi,

@RudiViewing profile: Rudi: Thanks for the link... let's see when I find some time for that.

"@Golfmann: That's precisely the idea behind daytime running lights, except they don't use the same high-wattage bulbs as low beam headlights (2x55 watts), but instead use much lower wattage ones (2x6 watts), and they don't require expensive light sources, but rather significantly cheaper ones. This saves diesel fuel and money by reducing wear and tear on the main headlights."

Best regards,

January.

The increased diesel consumption is certainly a valid argument, but I can't imagine seeing 6-watt light bulbs. I have 5-watt parking lights in my car, and depending on the sunlight, they are barely visible or not visible at all.

Sorry das ich jetzt daran zweifel, aber ich kenne diese Fahrscheinwerfer nicht. 'Explain it to me!'
Is this something like a 6-watt auxiliary light or a separate chamber within the headlight assembly?

Hi,

As you can see in Rudi's picture above, these are separate lamps. However, it would certainly be possible to implement them as a separate chamber if one were a lamp developer.

The difference from a standard light is that this one is designed to be seen as clearly as possible – a standard light bulb usually sits "somewhere" on the reflector and not where it would be most effectively reflected.

Here, the goal is different – to project light forward at a wide angle. This makes it unsuitable as a headlight (which is probably why you're allowed to drive without taillights), but it's good for being seen.

Best regards,

Jan is wondering if these parts for a Golf III would also fit in a 6K model next to the fog lights, and whether the approval certificate (ABE) is only valid for the Golf III or applies generally.

Hello Ralf,
These are separate lamps that (at least for the VW Golf 3) are installed in the turn signals.
can be integrated.
The reflectors in these headlights are – to put it bluntly – optimized to blind oncoming traffic (for maximum visibility).
The 6W bulbs are as easily recognizable as the normal low beam headlights.
they are absolutely useless for illuminating the road surface.

@ Jan:

You were faster at typing icon_cool.gif.

The ABE is not specifically for the Golf. I'll find it and scan the documents.

Best regards, Rudi.

Okay...

It's not even an ABE (German approval document), but rather a type approval according to ECE R87.

Here's the relevant section from the assembly instructions:

Hi Rudi,

(delayed) Thanks for the scan... I realize now that I phrased my question a bit unclearly. According to the image, you have these universal parts from Hella - of course, they must also be approved for use in every car.

I was referring to the approval certificate (ABE) for the built-in version for the G3 models (the ones that go next to the turn signals). If those are generally approved, then they might also fit on the 6K models.

Best regards,

January.

Hi everyone,

I'm bringing this topic up again.

dust blower

Does anyone know if daytime running lights using LED technology are already available for purchase? According to Google, several companies are working on them or plan to bring such products to market, as the advantages are obvious: long lifespan, low energy consumption, and compact design.

I find the latter to be particularly important for retrofitting.

Perfect would be something like 4x4 or 5x5 cm rectangular shapes with a very shallow depth icon_wink.gif.

Best regards,

January.

'So, I would also be very interested in LED daytime running lights or perhaps even fog lights with LEDs! However, I haven't been able to find any manufacturers... I have those images of the new Audis in mind. According to Audi: The headlights and taillights use diodes. They not only shine brighter and have a longer lifespan, but they also require ten times less energy than conventional incandescent bulbs. Of course, LED headlights also enable dynamic cornering lights, where the beam adjusts its direction and width by activating additional light elements to adapt to the road situation.'

So, I also want that. It all sounds great and it looks good too. Something like this should be developed for other models... I'm definitely not the only one who wants it.icon_biggrin.gif

Hello everyone,

I did some further research, and indeed, I couldn't find anything related to LED technology, only a lot of announcements about wanting to build something like that.

Besides Hella and In-Pro are active in this market, and both offer "universal" daytime running lights in square and round designs. The ones from Hella use 6 watt halogen bulbs, while the ones from In-Pro apparently use 21 watt non-halogen bulbs.

Therefore, the Hella products are likely better, but unfortunately, they are also larger in terms of their design and dimensions.

For my purposes, the round In-Pro recessed light (oval shape, 75 x 55 mm, 62 mm deep) is just a little too deep to install as desired.

Therefore, the new question is: Does anyone know of any other providers or products that are missing from the list above?

Best regards,

January.

I only know that Hella offers vehicle-specific lighting for the Volkswagen Golf 4.

Unfortunately, this doesn't help you much, but I just wanted to add this information.

Hi,

That might also be a good idea. If they have an "E" marking (which I assume they do), then they are not specific to the Golf 4 and are allowed on other vehicles as well.

I'll see if I can find a documentary that includes the weight of the actual lamps – maybe we can adapt them to fit the Ibi.

Best regards,

January.

And lo and behold, they actually exist... found on tuneline.at:

White LEDs are intended to replace the incandescent bulbs in headlights .

December 4, 2003: Hella has implemented the world's first series production application of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in a headlight for the new Audi A8 W12. This innovation from the automotive supplier, headquartered in Lippstadt, includes a combined position and daytime running light system and is intended, according to the company, to usher in a new era of automotive lighting technology.

Within the next seven years, it is said that this energy-efficient, long-lasting, and highly performant light source will also become established in low beam, high beam, and fog lights. The current implementation of this combined position and daytime running light on Audi's flagship model represents a first step towards a headlight completely equipped with LEDs. This year, at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, the company from Lippstadt presented such a prototype to the public for the first time. Due to their rapidly increasing performance, the manufacturer expects a quickly growing share of white light-emitting diodes in automotive lighting by the year 2010.

The new Audi A8 W12 serves as a further example of how white light-emitting diodes, in addition to their purely technical advantages, also open up completely new possibilities for front-end design. The innovative combined position and daytime running light – five high-performance white LEDs per headlight – offers a distinctive appearance for the premium model from Ingolstadt, both in its daytime running light function and as a dimmed position light at night. In terms of color, the light emitted by the white LEDs corresponds to the xenon light, which optimally illuminates the road surface through a bi-xenon module. Additionally, a turning light is intended to enhance safety when navigating tight curves.

http://www.tuneline.at/news/WeisseLEDs/images/A8Scheinwerfer.jpg

What is currently only permitted in Germany – driving with lights on during the day – is now mandatory in Scandinavian countries, some European nations, Switzerland, Italy, and Poland. This is based on ECE regulation R48 within European legislation, which has allowed the use of special daytime running lights since 1995. Now that the amendment to German law (§ 49a paragraph 5 of the Road Traffic Act) has been completed, any remaining doubts about the legality of solely operated daytime running lights have been eliminated. According to Hella, various studies and field tests demonstrate the safety benefits associated with using daytime running lights; in fact, the number of fatal accidents involving vehicles equipped with daytime running lights is reportedly 25 percent lower.

Hi,

I also found that part during my research, but it's not a retrofit solution that can be easily installed in another car.

However, I haven't made any progress either... I couldn't find the mounting dimensions for the Golf 4 headlights, and besides Inpro and Hella, I haven't found any other manufacturers.

So, if anyone has anything else to add...

Best regards,

January.

It's quite easy to accustom something to being without daylight.
Remove and disassemble the light switch. There are several contacts that can be accessed by turning.
The light switch is raised by a camshaft and therefore needs to be disconnected.
I have experimentally determined that the first and last ones must be disconnected for it to behave 'German' icon_smile.gif. I simply stuck a small piece of tape under the two contacts...

Best regards,
Jürgen

Hi,

*a huge cloud of dust from the thread spool*

I was just doing a little research on LED daytime running lights (earlier, a Phaeton was driving in front of me with really amazing DRLs... they were glare-free and very visible).

Hella now offers them, but they are quite expensive and (worse) have a very large installation depth.

The book has three categories:

- illegal stuff (very cheap)

- with an E-mark (around 50 euros). If you read carefully and between the lines, you'll see that they actually have an E-mark, but as a marker light, not as a daytime running lamp (DRL). In my opinion, this makes them just as illegal as the cheap ones.

- ECE87 certified, so it's legally compliant. Very expensive and, in my opinion, still too large.

So, the question is: Does anyone know of any LED daytime running lights that are legal (i.e., ECE87 compliant) and not excessively recessed? At the time we last discussed this thread (see details above), the answer was "They don't exist."

Best regards,

Jan.

P.S.: I've moved it to the correct category... the thread is so old that that category didn't even exist back then icon_wink.gif.

Hi Jan,

There are "specialist teams" that modify other cars to install the S6 LED daytime running lights.

"On the Passat forum, someone cut up their 3C (you have to modify the bumper) and installed these parts."

Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.
Transparency, Teamwork
... there was another T.

I don't know what the f*ck it was.
