Hello everyone,
'Does anyone have a wiring diagram for installing or retrofitting daytime running lights on a Skoda Octavia from 2001 onwards? I'd like to install them if possible.'
It can't be the high beam because it turns on when I start the ignition and turns off when I use the headlight switch for low beams or high beams.
Thank you very much for your help.

Swen.

Hello Swen.

The Octavia is probably a ree deer import from Denmark, like icon_wink.gif.

Unfortunately, I don't know exactly how it works on the Octavia and Golf 4, but on the Golf 3, the automatic light sensor is built directly into the headlight switch. Here in Denmark, you can buy this switch in two versions: with and without daytime running lights (although daytime running lights are legally required in Denmark).

Best regards from Jan.

Hi,

Sure, I understand. Please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation, without any explanations or additional comments.

Does anyone know about daytime running lights? Is it allowed to drive without the rear lights being on? In the past, something like that used to be prohibited because of the "emergency flashers" rule.

"I find daytime running lights to be useful in principle, but I don't want the entire light system to be active all the time."

Best regards,

January.

I can only comment on the rules here in Denmark.
"Using only headlights at the front is not permitted. The taillight must always be on as well. However, the headlight used does not have to be the main beam; it can also originate from fog lights or special driving lights. In the latter case, however, the switch to the normal low beam must occur at sunset."
In Canada, by the way, headlights are only allowed at the front of the vehicle (my parents live there). They also often use daytime running lights with power limitation as headlights (i.e., dimmed). This saves energy, but it can be extremely blinding if you don't switch to normal low beam when it gets dark icon_evil.gif.

Something like that should also be introduced here in Germany.

If I understand you correctly, replacing the light switch in a Golf 3 will enable daytime running lights. In other words, turning on the ignition will automatically turn on the low beam headlights?

Hi,

Something like that should also be introduced here in Germany.

In Schleswig-Holstein (on the B404 road between the A1 and A21 motorways), a pilot project is currently underway.
with daylight hours to reduce the number of accidents on this stretch of road.

If I understand you correctly, replacing the light switch in a Golf3 will enable daytime running lights? In other words, turning on the ignition will automatically turn on the low beam headlights?

It could be.
I have the parts from Hella installed in my car (2 x 6W), and InPro also distributes similar products.
The relay that is activated receives positive voltage from the fuel shut-off valve and ground through a...
Headlight bulb.
It is likely to be more affordable than a dedicated light switch.
Nowadays, these lights are also integrated into the turn signals for the VW Golf 3.

Best regards, Rudi.

For the G3, there are also different types of light switches available (a separate part for DK, N, RCD, etc.).

The problem is solved mechanically on a daily basis.

To replicate it, I've already completely disassembled a dimmer switch. (And I know what needs to be built if I had the time.)

It's almost certain that the G4 will be programmable (using CAN or something similar).

Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.

A headlight switch for a Golf 3, including the fog light function, costs 92.70 euros here in Denmark. icon_eek.gif

Could it also be a mechanical solution within the switch itself in the G4? A Canadian G4 has a headlight switch without a dedicated parking light setting. It's either headlights on or low beam. The only difference is the illumination of the dashboard. Parking lights are only activated by turning the key out of the ignition while the low beams are on. This prevents anyone from driving around with just the parking lights on, which I think is a very clever solution.

"Is that what you mean? That sounds very interesting. However, it would automatically imply that in Germany, daytime running lights only require illumination at the front of the vehicle, not at the rear."

Since I drive several kilometers through wooded areas every day, I know why I want something like that. Unfortunately, the oncoming traffic often doesn't icon_sad.gif.

Hi Rudi,

How did you solve the issue with the rear lights? Or is it perhaps not even required in Germany?

"2x6 watts sounds tempting... is that bright enough to be seen?"

Best regards,

January.

Hi,
The parts from Hella have a General Operating Permit (ABE), which I can gladly scan and email to you or upload.
The connection is (in principle) as described in the documentation (i.e., without tail lights).
Both the TÜV inspector and the police officer were initially a bit confused, but they were satisfied after reviewing the documents.

The reflectors are optimized for visibility (though some might say they cause glare for oncoming traffic).
(without illumination). Therefore, the 6W bulbs are very easy to identify.
The only problem is that some people mistake them for fog lights.
They get a little confused when the correct fog lights turn on icon_twisted.gif.

In Denmark, I drive during the day with my headlights on (so that the taillights are also illuminated).
It's still cheaper than using headlights, and the local police are happy with it.

Best regards, Rudi.

Hi Rudi,

"Thank you, that's exactly what I wanted to know."

Considering the issue with the reflectors, it's actually quite clear why you are allowed to operate vehicles without taillights – simply put, escape routes are not possible icon_wink.gif.

What did you pay for the parts?

Best regards,

January.

In Denmark, daytime running lights are located both at the front and rear of the vehicle, functioning as a parking light with low beam headlights.
I just visited the VW workshop where I did my apprenticeship a long time ago.

Simply put: Pull out the light switch, disconnect the TFL terminal in the light switch.
The cable color was yellow/green, and that's when the daytime running lights stopped working.
Isolate the cables with connectors well and set them aside, install a switch.
Ready.

See you, Swen.

I'm interested in knowing why you wanted to disable the daytime running lights.

Hi,

@ Jan,
Someone is offering the parts for sale on eBay for around 50 euros.
I paid about the same amount.

Best regards, Rudi.

I always drive with my lights on. It's become a habit.
I converted my VW Golf 3 to have xenon headlights, and it just looks better when you're driving with the lights on.
Furthermore, the safety effect is not as insignificant as one might think. Since I started riding with lights, very few people have cut me off anymore.
It should also be introduced in Germany.
