Hi,
It's not easy to say exactly how much primary energy is wasted in the process of converting rapeseed oil into biodiesel (RME). After all, glycerol is produced during the esterification process, which can be sold elsewhere and would otherwise require other processes that also consume energy. To get accurate figures for all these processes is necessary; otherwise, there's a risk of significant errors.
If I understand correctly, the NaOH or KOH that acts as a catalyst remains in the biodiesel (RME). It's kind of strange: it's quite aggressive, hygroscopic, and could potentially contribute to ash formation, which might clog the soot filters.
I probably wronged Mr. Elsbett for years. I dismissed the stated consumption figures as nonsense, just like with bent connecting rods, etc. I probably overlooked the fact that his homemade engine wasn't just slightly adjusted for optimal performance, but was already a direct injection system back then. Hello everyone,
For the sake of completeness: In my opinion, Elsbeth also took a first step towards particulate diesel (PD) technology by foregoing an external EGR valve and integrating it into the cylinder head. Of course, VAG did it better, but they were about 10-15 years ahead!

Especially because biodiesel isn't as 'bio' as it is always portrayed to be. Then there are the high subsidies for this 'broth.' It's the same situation as with natural gas (although things are slightly different there). I'm willing to talk about PÖL, but not about RME. As you already wrote, why does the oil have to be re-esterified (and thus valuable energy has to be consumed again) in order to put it into cars? If it's 'bio,' then do it properly.

The 'Pöl' from Aldi is already a bit more solid.
but still quite smooth.
However, if you're fueling up at a proper gas station...
Then you can almost start cutting the fleece, it's shedding that badly.

Well, in this case, the fuel is adapted to the engine, not the engine to the fuel.
The latter method would be the more environmentally friendly option, as the viscosity of rapeseed oil can be reduced without transesterification through a simple measure: heating. There is more than enough heat available in the engine – completely free! The only remaining disadvantage is the lower cetane number of rapeseed oil compared to biodiesel (RME) and conventional diesel. I believe that this issue can be addressed with any engine design when the engine is at operating temperature, as countless vehicles running on rapeseed oil demonstrate.
'However, both Pöl and RME share a common problem: Unlike with Dino fuel, the higher flash points of these fuels prevent them from evaporating into the lubricating oil. This results in a continuous increase in the fuel concentration within the oil. If Pöl or RME enters the lubrication circuit and comes into contact with particularly hot areas, undesirable reactions (cracking and polymerization) can occur, leading to the formation of solid reaction products that can clog lubrication channels.'
Fuel accumulation is a problem with all direct injectors and tends to occur primarily under partial load conditions and at idle. It seems that the injectors do not atomize the fuel as well under partial load. (or is that the only possible explanation?)
@Gremlin: Your magnificent example of a Düse makes me believe that you might be able to explain the atomization phenomenon in more detail.
PS: Mit etwas politischem Willen könnten Dieselfahrzeuge per Aufpreis ab Werk mit einer automatischen 2-Tank-Lösung (Pöl/Dino) ausgerüstet werden, incl. Einbindung des Motormanagements (EDC oder wie sich das schimpft). Bei Teillast und Kälte würde automatisch auf Dino geschaltet. Das wäre eine sauberere Lösung als das übliche Umrüsten. Nach Abziehen des Zündschlüssels noch eine automatische Dino-Spülung (wenn die nicht schon vorher durch Teillast erfolgt ist), also auch Hausfrauen-tauglich.

Hmmm... What actually happens if you mix heating oil and rapeseed oil in a 1:1 ratio? The resulting mixture is still quite viscous and smells like rapeseed.
Furthermore, heating oil is naturally yellowish-brown in color. Does the red component of the heating oil then become noticeable?

Sure...
Heating oil can have significantly less lubricity, and contain considerably more particles and contaminants. Furthermore, heating oil does not have a precisely defined cetane number. Additionally, heating oil lacks flow improvers (which can be problematic in the winter), and other important additives.
We had a generator here that was powered by heating oil. In addition to the specially adapted fuel injection pump, we regularly added flow improver (from an external tank) during the autumn/winter months.
