Ugh, always this demonization of power supplies.
If we were to follow your logic, every turbocharged direct injection (TDI) engine would fail after a maximum of 10,000 kilometers, right?
Do you know of any relevant statistics?
Of course , a chip can cause a lot of damage - but incorrect chip tuning can break even more things, due to changes in the fuel injection amount plus the modified boost pressure and fuel/injection timing.
For example, it is almost impossible to destroy the ZKD (zero-point kinetic device) by force using a box, because its operation prevents the peak pressures from increasing can (unless the boost pressure is increased to a point where the control system can no longer handle the increased drive energy of the turbocharger. But if things get too chaotic, the emergency mode is activated - see above).
With chip tuning, you can certainly damage catalytic converters on a large scale: By significantly increasing the boost pressure and fuel injection timing, after just 50 km of aggressive driving, there will be no more water in the expansion tank - if the turbocharger even lasts that long .
And both legal and illegal versions (with and without TÜV approval) exist for both types of tuning. Gruß Ulf

Hi Ulf,
... Of course, with chip tuning, you can effectively destroy catalytic converters on a large scale: By significantly increasing the turbocharger pressure and fuel injection timing, after just 50 km of aggressive driving, there will be no more water in the expansion tank - assuming the turbocharger can withstand it for that long .
However, the statistics look very similar to those of engines that were killed by boxing .

Hello,
Even if I repeat myself, there are no power boxes that can increase boost pressure. And if there are, it's only in the way Bertil described, and then the reading will usually be too low when checked with VAG-Com.
The Jetbooster definitely does not do that!
@Poldi: Can you name some box manufacturers that increase boost pressure?
Your 1.25 bar reading is likely due to overpressure, but it's not a sustained charging pressure, right?
However, as I mentioned, a boost pressure log would be extremely informative for properly assessing the situation.

I forgot to mention: If the chip tuner only programs a "10c" tune by shifting or distorting the fuel injection map, you can still damage the pistons and VTG (variable turbine geometry) just as easily as with an overly aggressive tune.
And anyone capable of distinguishing between chip tuners of different qualities should also be able to choose or adjust a tuning box in such a way that their engine and drivetrain last as long with the tuning as they would without it, given appropriate use.
I don't want to present power boxes as the ultimate solution (if I were to have my ASZ tuned, I would also opt for CT tuning), but rather to counter the currently prevalent "box = junk, CT = the perfect solution" rhetoric. Gruß Ulf

hmm
So many posts... regarding a question about boost pressure: Well, 1.25 bar represents a brief peak – normally, and currently, my engine is running just below the 1.25 bar limit. To reassure some people: I recently had it checked on a Kübelbeck dynamometer (I have a friend there with a fully equipped setup), and now everything seems to be in order. The power output is 128 hp and 296 Nm of torque, the boost pressure is correct, the emissions are Euro3/D4, and the exhaust temperature is also okay. I will continue to use the tuning box – however, if the opportunity arises, I will still sell it and have a professional tuning done by the company Oettinger.
'gg' ... Yesterday, a girl told me, 'Ugh... old diesel guzzler... you should have bought yourself a decent engine.' I was speechless. '...I drive a TDI... and you... a Fiat with a tiny 1.1L engine... lol. Well, I could laugh it off.'
In that sense.
Thank you for the information. Anyone who wants the tuning file is welcome to have it, provided they have a Jetbooster.

Box vs. Chip Tuning.
There is junk everywhere.
Seppel's Backyard Power Chip Tuning or Üzgür Krasse Boost Boxes.
You can also refer to companies like KW-Systems or *** Chiptuning...
I'm leaning towards chip tuning because it adjusts the turbo boost and the engine doesn't produce excessive smoke.
but not cheap, low-quality junk, but something decent.
So far, I haven't met anyone who has experienced any damage due to chip tuning or a tuning box.
And I know many TDI drivers who have extremely modified their cars.

Regarding the ***:
My initial impression remains the same, because he doesn't exaggerate the torque output, and (supposedly) offers a full warranty that takes over from the manufacturer's warranty, which is something no other company is likely to match quickly.
Even the optional TÜV (German technical inspection authority) registration, which is typical for *** and can be added during the tuning process, initially made it more appealing to me than practically all its competitors.
Then, I received information from a highly competent source (whose identity I don't know, and who may not want to be publicly named here - but it's definitely not a competitor!) that *** also installs an extra circuit board in ECUs that are capable of OBD tuning, specifically to prevent the reading of their tuning data.
What could he possibly be hiding, especially since tuning an EDC 15 is now a routine procedure?
Would it be embarrassing for *** if, in professional circles, people were discussing his possibly tampered identification data, or if it were possible to possibly determine that the data originated from outside the *** company?
Unfortunately, his additional electronics not only obscure the tuning file, but could also cause engine malfunctions during operation – if his watchdog processor mistakenly believes that the engine control unit is not reading the standard engine maps, but rather a tuning map, and then cuts off the connection between the map memory and the EDC processor.
I personally find unnecessary hardware modifications to the engine control unit (ECU) to be abhorrent, as they do not increase its reliability but can only decrease it.
And I don't want to end up under a truck coming the other way, just because a pointless copy protection processor malfunctions during what was actually a well-calculated overtaking maneuver, or because a poorly soldered joint, messed up by the tuner, gives out!
Two calls to local tuning shops clearly indicated that they had soldered something inside my engine control unit (ECU), even though it is definitely capable of being tuned via the OBD port, as another tuner has now proven.
(By the way, he also programmed a torque curve with a "peak" at my request - and a nominal 360 Nm plateau from approximately 1800 to 2400 rpm is also fun, without immediately stressing the clutch with peak values of 400 Nm or even more.)
Then I'll ignore the unique *** full warranty and the convenient TÜV service, but also the additional electronics that are completely useless to me and only risky . Gruß Ulf

Hi,
Regarding the "selection protection" feature, I have mixed feelings: On the one hand, I can understand why a manufacturer would want to protect their products from being copied. On the other hand, it could also be that there's nothing particularly groundbreaking to protect, and the "selection protection" is simply used to justify inflated prices. You only know for sure once you've actually examined the software. (And the additional circuit board would have to be removable, of course...)
@ Poldi : Regarding the tuning box mentioned in this thread: Did you purchase the box on eBay through a private sale? Who was the sender of the package? Was there an invoice included?

Hi,
What's funny about tuning: animal cruelty or a spelling mistake?
Quote: | | ...the vehicle's control unit will be reprogrammed and re-flashed... |

What is the difference between "neu programmieren" and "re-programmieren"?

If some companies operate in a way that reflects the appearance of their website, I can understand the reservations people have about tuning (or modifying) their products.

You're right, Ulf.
I only mentioned *** because it's a well-known name. Personally, I wouldn't have the tuning done there either. Moreover, I was told by someone (a confidential source) that *** doesn't program everything themselves, but like many others, they purchase the software. This person extracted the *** software (bypassing the copy protection) and found the name of the manufacturer listed multiple times within the tuning software.
Furthermore, with ***, no custom requests can be accommodated, and the vehicle isn't even put on a dynamometer for testing. It's just a standard *** product, and it's expensive. They just install the chip and it's done.
By the way, with *** Tuning, the factory warranty is NOT maintained!
It will be covered by ***, or their insurance company. I have this in writing from Audi.
I could also mention MTM (which isn't exactly a hit with the TDi either) or Turbopapst Hohenester .
I'm not even familiar with KW-Systems boxes. I only know about D-Chips. And I wouldn't recommend D-Chips to anyone.
I only know about cheap tuning boxes, and a friend of mine who works at Mercedes told me that with the CDI engines, the exhaust manifold sometimes cracks due to excessive exhaust temperatures, and that one 320 CDI had a hairline crack in the cylinder head. The same thing can happen with cheap aftermarket chip tuning!

My friend had a D-Chip box installed, and the car was making a really loud, rumbling noise.
Then the device was reinstalled at the VW dealer (where it was also originally purchased), but after that, the engine's performance was almost completely gone. That's why there was still some black smoke coming from the exhaust.
He now has a chip from Hohenester installed. The car runs much smoother now. It doesn't pull so hard (the torque peak is gone), it doesn't produce as much soot, it uses less fuel, but it pulls much better, especially at higher RPMs. The boost pressure has been increased by 0.15 bar. This is a 110 hp A4.
Two Volkswagen dealerships have removed the D-Chip boxes from their product range. There have been repeated complaints from customers about excessive smoke emissions and/or engine misfires.

However, the EDC protects itself from this nonsense automatically (emergency shutdown due to persistent deviation from the normal operating range, the so-called 'fear curve' due to exceeding the maximum pressure), so you should be glad.
Hello,
There is no 'fear field.' Instead, there are two threshold curves (one for the lower control limit and one for the upper control limit). If these are undershot or exceeded after a predetermined time, the system goes into emergency mode. The error message will indicate either 'control deviation: lower control limit undershot' or 'control deviation: upper control limit exceeded.' However, this was not programmed for peak pressure monitoring, but rather to detect problems in the boost pressure control system. For turbochargers, this is a beneficial side effect.
Best, Ben.
