Millions of gas stations do it this way...

Engine speed, throttle position, intake manifold pressure (if available). Fine-tuning via oxygen sensor.

Are you sure the SDI doesn't have a mass airflow sensor?

By the way, my LMM is from ITT and it's a 1N4007. It works great and saves fuel (for some reason).

I've built a fake mass airflow sensor (MAF) for the LMM using an AVR microcontroller. It calculates the approximate air mass based on engine speed and boost pressure. So far, it works reasonably well. However, it occasionally becomes unstable (likely due to issues with the RPM measurement), resulting in a zero air mass reading. The engine control unit (ECU) then interprets this as a fault condition and triggers a limp-home mode with approximately 500mg/stroke. To improve accuracy and obtain a more precise air mass value, one would need to incorporate the intake air temperature into the calculation.
But otherwise, I agree with Gremlin. The other sensors are similarly susceptible to interference as the mass airflow sensor (MAF).

To get back to the topic...

In our newspaper, it was reported that the new fuel is mostly (the percentage wasn't specified) produced synthetically from natural gas.
I suspect there are two reasons for this:
1. Developing an 'alternative' to crude oil.
2. Providing an even purer fuel for a cleaner combustion process.

It's possible that this new fuel will behave the same way as regular gasoline. Over time, there will be more and more cars optimized for this type of fuel, just like all new gasoline-powered cars are now designed to run on premium gasoline only. In many European countries, regular gasoline is no longer available. Let's wait a few years and see what happens. Then it will likely be the same with diesel.VW once said that we still need better fuels to make engines cleaner and more fuel-efficient. Now, there's the fuel for that, and the engines designed to use it will be available soon. They will probably also work with older diesel engines, but then they will produce more emissions and have less power, just like a gasoline engine designed for premium fuel being run on regular.

Hm, if that were the case, I would switch to a different brand of gasoline. That's why the new 3.5-liter V6 from Mercedes-Benz happily runs on regular gasoline, while its competitors all require premium... If everything was optimized for V-Power, I would fill up at the private airfield. Aviation fuel has 110 octane....if you're going to do it, then do it right! icon_wink.gif

If you think about it:

Today, you can get 66 kW from an engine with a displacement of 1.6 liters, and even 55 kW or even 74 kW from an engine with a displacement of 1.4 liters.

'The engines have a higher compression ratio and require fuel with a higher octane rating, as well as operating at higher RPMs.'

First, they lure the customer in with lower taxes (based on engine displacement), then with ultimate new technology.

Basically, these toy engines don't actually use less fuel because you have to rev them up quite high. And the 16-valve technology adds its own problems. The maximum power is at 4000 RPM... that's laughable.

The end of the story: I have to pay more money, at best for the same amount of fuel, because my car needs 'premium' gasoline instead of regular. What's the point of that?

And no one can tell me that those few octane (or cetane) numbers cost significantly more to produce.

'Man, people are getting so soft these days... back in the day, my ex-girlfriend had an '88 Golf 2... those 54 horsepower were really noticeable in every situation, the engine was fantastic! The only downside was that the cold morning starting ritual wasn't exactly appreciated by the neighbors... but it still sounded like a diesel, which I can't quite say about my own car anymore (question from an uninformed passenger: 'Is that a quiet 1.8T...? Or maybe a 2.4?') *grumble*.'
