Hi,
Since my CYP gearbox is defective, I'm considering installing the ASD gearbox from a 90hp TDI engine into my AFN engine. The ASD gearbox has a longer gear ratio than my CYP gearbox, and it would likely also improve the top speed. What do you think about such a conversion?

Regards,
Reuselkopp.

Is ASD longer than CYP?

Really?

If you have the data from the GKB.html file that I mentioned, try consulting other sources as well.

Generally, GKB.html is my go-to resource, but no resource is perfect, and I've already found some errors in it.

I can hardly imagine... Oh crap, AFN in the Vari has the CYP, which could very well be shorter than the ASD (1Z in the standard G3).

Then I'll get an ASD icon_smile.gif too.

m;
which only has a 4-speed gearbox, because the 1st gear in the CTN is an off-road gear, but not really intended for the road icon_confused.gif ... so short, as it is.

@dieselmartinViewing profile: dieselmartin,

"Yes, the ASD (automatic slip differential) is consistently longer in terms of gear ratios than the CYP. Before I got my Variant, I had a Limousine with the 90PS TDI engine, and I found the gear ratios to be great. The 1Z engine pulled strongly in all gears. So, the disappointment was significant when I drove my Variant. I kept thinking something was wrong with the car when starting in first gear because the first gear is so incredibly short. This choice of gearbox is really incomprehensible to me, especially since the CYP was also used in the AFN Limousine (GTI TDI)."

alternatively, just change to the 5th gear.

Frank wrote something once.

02A 311 361 AM; 02A 311 158 AF = 28/40 = 0.7

02D 311 361; 02D 311 158 = 32/47 = 0.681

02Z311158A; 02Z311361A = 27/41 = 0.658 (the leaf spring of the gear attachment needs to be modified here).

I've put the maximum amount allowed in mine (approximately 150€ at VW) and I can theoretically reach a top speed of 250 km/h icon_biggrin.gif.

He apparently achieves a real-world consumption of about 235 liters according to the navigation system.

If I understand correctly, then the 5th gear with a ratio of 0.658 is longer (has a higher numerical value) than 0.7.
I have a value of 0.7 in the ASD.
What is the maximum speed at 0.681?

Should I choose the longer gear ratio already with around 140 horsepower? I'm still not quite understanding the logic behind gearboxes.

Yes, the smaller the number, the longer the translation takes, and the 'faster' you can go, but the slower the acceleration.

ASD has a value of 0.717.

'For a significant upgrade, you can already start with around 140 horsepower. In my case, I have stage 1 tuning, which increases the power to 150 horsepower, and I'm wondering if that's sufficient.'
but you can't drive in the 5th gear if you're below 70... and good acceleration only starts around 2500 rpm (it depends on the torque curve, but in my case, it's much earlier icon_cool.gif).

Okay, my problem is that I'm currently working. That means he currently has the larger injectors installed, and he's about to get a larger intercooler.
Since I have to remove my gearbox anyway (to replace the release bearing and synchronizer rings), it seems like a good opportunity... Is it possible to drive it like this on a daily basis?
"Even at 70, I'm not in the 5th gear, which would be fine. But if I'm stuck in 5th gear at 120-130 km/h and nothing happens, then I probably have to disassemble the transmission twice..."

You can replace the 5th one without much effort while it's still installed; you just need to unscrew the wheel. It actually looks even better when installed, because you have to pull quite hard icon_wink.gif.

You can definitely install the full-length fifth fan if you're already optimizing for performance.
Let's say that from 100 (km/h or mph), you can really accelerate well in 5th gear.

I don't miss the old ASD-5 gear. icon_wink.gif

It's only corrosive in the range around 70-80 mph; at that speed, the fourth gear is almost too high, and the fifth gear isn't quite enough. You often have to shift back and forth if you want to accelerate.

Since I mostly drive on the highway anyway, it doesn't bother me much.
"If an AFN engine happens to cross my path, I'll probably rebuild the engine anyway. So, for now, I'm focusing on the things around it, like a larger turbocharger, a different gearbox, etc. I already have the injectors from an AFN engine because I got them for almost nothing."

Is it a secret what exactly you did or how you achieved this performance? If not, I'd like to contact you via ICQ.

It's not a secret; it's right there in the signature icon_wink.gif.
You can still reach me via ICQ: 174 060 757.

I wouldn't recommend using the gearbox from an AFN engine. Firstly, it has a shorter gear ratio, and secondly, AFN engines have a smaller clutch, 220mm in diameter, compared to the 90hp models which have a 228mm clutch. That's why, when replacing the clutch on an AFN engine, it's always advisable to install the larger clutch (which is compatible with all models).

So, you don't need to replace the gearbox; doing so would likely be a step backward.
What you need to do is convert it to a VTG turbo (or have you already? Yes, you'll never reach 140 horsepower with a turbocharger that uses a wastegate).

No, don't misunderstand!
I haven't reached 140 horsepower yet; that's my temporary goal. I'm just preparing everything right now. That's why I'm getting the LLK (low loader kit). I want to keep the gearbox; I basically want to give it a complete overhaul since a new one is too expensive, and I happen to have another one lying around.

Is it that easy to rebuild a turbo?
If so, then I wouldn't buy any AFN (presumably referring to a specific product or type of item). What's the point? The slightly more stable bearings don't justify the price.

Did you have all the technical aspects done by Micro?

Yes, if you get an AFN, definitely get it!
The pistons and cylinders are different... my AHU piston is cracked (due to a faulty injector, though).

'And for some parts needed for the conversion, like the engine control unit, turbo, ESP, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and downpipe, it's often cheaper to buy a complete AFN engine and sell your old one.'

I had all the software-related work done by Micro, and I'm satisfied with the results!

Okay, I think I'll first do everything that's preparatory for the ABN (presumably a specific event or project), and then I'll rebuild the engine, because since the ESP (presumably an engine component) needs to be replaced, it's not worth it otherwise.
AHU pistons? I thought you also had an AFN engine.

I'm going to ask Micro what he wants for that stuff...
Since you now have 190 horsepower, I assume he knows what he's doing. A cheap tuner would definitely have problems with that.

I used to have an AHU, but now I have pump-injector pistons installed. icon_biggrin.gif

Yes, let Micro give you some advice!

@ reuselkopp

Okay, I compared ASD-CTN-CYP to our table http://www.dieselschrauber.de/GKB.html.

The CYP is almost the same as a CTN (sometimes 1-2% longer).

The ASD is already doing quite a bit more.

You're saying that AFN has CYP in Limo and Vari?
What is the maximum speed (Vmax) that the AFN achieves?

My thoughts on this:
To the best of my knowledge, the newer TDI models are designed such that the maximum power output also corresponds to the maximum speed.
Furthermore, I assume that the 1Z and AFN engines have the same maximum power output at the same engine speed.

If the AFN is now significantly faster than the 1Z (which I believe), the 1Z will not be able to reach its maximum power output in 5th gear.

This, in turn, means that if you have a more powerful 1Z engine, you will definitely have a higher top speed (which is not usually the case, as the peak power is not typically shifted on the RPM scale).

With a strong first gear, a longer overall gear ratio becomes worthwhile again.

1Z Variant, top speed: 175 km/h.
Let's say the top speed is 193 km/h.
So, a strong 1Z can already achieve 193, even with the same CTN as the CYP.

If he then gets another ASD (5%) longer, something really good should happen icon_twisted.gif, like 202 or so.

Understandable, comprehensible?

@Dieselmartin

The top speed for the Variant model is stated as 190 km/h, while the Sedan model has a top speed of 196 km/h.

Greetings.
Reuselkopp.
