hello
I need a tip.
I have a 4B Avant (see SIG).
with increasingly loud banging noises coming from the rear.
Since spring (after I changed the tires, I thought).
I blamed it on the tires (sawtooth pattern).
Now, with 4 new ones, there's still no improvement.
So, it's probably the shock absorbers that are worn out.
and they have to be done anyway.
But the amount of noise is speed-dependent.
Could it be a wheel bearing?
According to the documents, these can only be replaced as a set with the hub, or can they be replaced individually?
'Because the parts with the hub bearing cost around 80 euros each, it's quite expensive for a preventative replacement.'
So: everything new, because then everything will definitely be okay.
or try it first with new shock absorbers.
Thomas.

Okay, I lifted the car up.
Okay,
No lateral play in the wheel suspension, no cracking when shaken.
and no grinding noise when turning.
The wheel bearing is probably okay, right?
The brake pads are slightly grinding in one position, but braking doesn't seem to be affected.
to the clattering noises.
That leaves the shock absorbers as a likely source of the problem.
They are completely flat, with 4-5 aftershocks observed during the shake test, and no gas noises are audible.
This will be done first.
I received an offer for Monroe speakers for €170, fully assembled.
(definitely not at the friendly, free-wheeling Reifen-Fritze's place)
Is that okay?

Then I want to continue my solo entertainer thread.
I've now installed two new Monroe tires on the rear.
The rattling has become significantly less.
The rest will come from the washings I collect over the next 2 weeks (2000 km).
I put them in my new Dunlops.
I'll keep using these until winter, after which I'll need to get new ones.
The bearings are still in good condition, but one is slightly noisier than the other.
It will remain like that for now.
After this thread helped me with my decision-making...
'having been helpful, there's nothing left to decide now.'
is he totally over it (if he wasn't already from the beginning )
and can be closed if you like.
I hope he doesn't end up in the toilet.
and doesn't bring me too many negative karma points.
I don't know what that means.
Thomas.

Why? It's not your fault that no one else could help you. By mentioning the likely cause, maybe this thread will be helpful to someone else in the future. Gruß Christian

and UP!
because
Until the tire change in the fall (summer tires off, winter tires on).
I completely ruined my Dunlop 9000 tires, size 205/55-16.
The rumbling gradually grew louder.
And finally, there was a raised area, approximately 5mm high, about 20cm long, and located on the inside.
Then I took off the winter tires (195/65-15 Michelin).
it's getting louder again .
What should I do?
I drive quite a bit, but I get new tires every six months.
I never had to buy that.
He also has a sawtooth pattern on the back, and my dealer (who also installed the Monroes) confirmed it.
He naturally wants to sell me new tires.

What do your control arms/trailing arms, etc., and the rest of the front axle do?
The rattling usually comes from the direction of the A6.
Just ask the service advisor if the 40G4 campaign has already been performed on your car. This involves checking the steering tie rods. Most of them will also check the rest of the steering components at the same time (since they want to sell you something).

Sure, here's the translation:
'Nene,'
Everything at the front was replaced a year ago.
The rumbling/thumping sound is coming from behind.
Wheel speed dependent.
at certain speeds, it almost sounds like a knocking.
as if the car is bouncing.
I get the impression that it's louder/more noticeable at the beginning of a journey (when the tires/bearings are cold...?).
That the 4b Avant eats through tires.
(front: designed for weight distribution (braking), rear: saw-tooth pattern)
I was aware of that, but I didn't realize I wouldn't even last for more than six months.
Is this normal, or not?
Thomas.

Oh, sorry... I somehow missed that it was about the back .
Have you ever had a wheel alignment done? It might not directly explain the clunking noise, but it could explain the excessive tire wear... or rather, the "sawtooth" pattern on the tires, which could be causing the clunking... because you said that everything was fine with new tires at first.

Hi,
Even if you have new shocks installed: Have the shocks checked (front and rear). The bounce test won't tell you much. Take it to the ADAC (German automobile club) and have the transmission curve measured. You can also have your wheel alignment checked there.
If you drive with unbalanced tires for half a year, I wouldn't be surprised if the shock absorbers are already damaged.
Why are you so sure it's coming from the rear? With the Avant, many things look like they're coming from the rear (the angled windshield, the steeper rear window).
Regards,
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

Okay,
after the rumbling grew louder again.
and one morning I found an oil stain under the rear wheel.
and also a wheel bearing has worn out.
I was back at my tire dealer.
and
Everything is okay now, let's see how long it lasts.
Completed:
replacing a wheel bearing.
Both shock absorbers were replaced under warranty.
All wheels cleaned (with sand inside), and balanced to 0 grams.
I am currently satisfied, but I have fear/respect for the side effects.
Thomas.

Hello,
I probably discovered your comment a bit late. You wrote that one wheel bearing was louder than the other. Wheel bearings shouldn't make any noise at all. That's why it's also correct that one was later replaced.
"I also have a slight rattling sound on the right rear, only when driving over rough surfaces and at a specific speed. In my car, there's something like a strut mount/plate inside the rear shock absorber (I believe the Passat and A6 are almost identical), and I suspect that's the issue. Otherwise, it could be something related to the body/rear axle suspension, or the fuel tank/connection."
Respect for the NW is not wrong, I got the cheese. Aktuell:
