My question is already stated above. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to ask it by phone. And, unfortunately, no one responds to inquiries submitted through the contact form.
So, is this kit suitable for reading out a 1Z engine from a car manufactured in 1993? Unfortunately, it didn't work with an old part I bought on eBay; it only showed the ABS. According to the VAG-COM manual, not all diagnostic adapters are compatible.

Hi,
hm, today my phone only rang three times, and one time, when I managed to answer in time, someone wanted to buy a Byteshooter Master for 2800EUR. The other time it was a 'normal' inquiry. I also have rather poor reception here at the moment.
Regarding the 1Z: If the laptop has a genuine serial port, it should work (set the start baud rate to 240).
Best regards, Rainer.

Today, I didn't call either, or maybe I did, but it was at 6 PM and the phone was turned off... But never mind, thanks for your quick reply!
Oh yeah, I don't have a serial cable at all. I drive the car right up to the window and place my PC on the windowsill, and then the connection just barely works... And it's a real serial connection.

Whether it makes sense to only read the error memory is something you can determine; read a few of the posts here. Perhaps you could also borrow a laptop... Aktuell:

In my opinion, reading error codes statically is the least effective approach.
When an error code is stored, it's often already the case that something else is broken (or the code is completely irrelevant, like the "Klemme_DF" code in almost every 1Z system).
It's really interesting for debugging and understanding what's happening inside, especially when looking at logs under load, usually full load. And in those cases, a large battery for the PC in the car or a laptop is often the only solution .

Besides error codes, there are also things like the idle speed control and temperature values, which are definitely measured only or also when the vehicle is stationary. And of course, taste is important when it comes to food... Gruß Christian

I'm mainly interested in being able to adjust/check the start of the injection. I don't need anything else for that. And do I really have to drive there for that?
Unfortunately, my B4 is currently failing. According to information in this forum, the crankshaft bolt might be loose. However, there's actually one in there that's not supposed to come loose – the one with the collar.
"It started with the engine refusing to start without preheating. This got progressively worse to the point where it wouldn't even start when warm, even with preheating. I ended up disconnecting the temperature sensor to get it started."
"Now, it won't even run with a temperature sensor attached. When starting, it emits huge amounts of white smoke that smells strongly of unburned diesel, and it seems like only one or two cylinders fire at a time, then nothing."
"When the engine speed drops towards 1000 RPM while driving, it doesn't respond to acceleration, the engine misfires, and it emits white/blue smoke. If you downshift and give it some gas, it runs smoothly again."
I ran the engine while it was stationary and tried to access the control unit with my eBay diagnostic adapter, but I always got too many errors and it would stop working. It's a really bad adapter. I've ordered a new one. At least when it was running outside, I had the temperature sensor reconnected, and my car turned the entire yard into a wall of fog. It didn't stop, even when the engine was warm.
I hope the pump hasn't failed. Well, I'd rather leave it be for now, just in case I risk engine damage. Man, and I really don't have time to take my car apart right now.
Does anyone nearby have an A4 TDI, not an Avant, not an automatic, with an electric sunroof, preferably in red, for a maximum of €4000? If so, it would give me a little more time to finish restoring my B4.

Yes, I know, the adapter is initially cheaper than the software, and if I get one that works, I can buy the software later.

If you are really planning to buy a license, it is significantly cheaper if you get something proper right away. While everything else might seem better/cheaper in the short term, it usually isn't in the medium or long term.

I think this will be enough for now. I don't have as much time to work on cars as I used to, and I can't do it as much anymore for health reasons. I unfortunately had to give up my job as a car mechanic. And this should definitely be enough for the few things I'll be doing with it. It's probably cheaper for me to have it diagnosed directly by Audi, but what can you do? I just don't like it when someone else works on my car.
And if I no longer need it, I already know someone who would be happy to buy it from me. So there's no risk for me at all.

Well, unfortunately, it seems this kit from the shop wasn't what I was looking for.
I can use this to read all the data from my A4 TDI, from front to back. However, with my Audi 80 TDI, I get the same message as I do with a cheap adapter from eBay.
G71M=-1
"Too many errors in data transmission, connection terminated."
I can use this to check the ABS, but unfortunately, it doesn't show any problems.
And now?

Rainer's suggestion that the 1Z engine would work with the kit was generally correct, if it were a Golf or Passat. However, you didn't specify which vehicle it was for, so the problem lies on both sides of the communication. The issues with 1Z engine control units are well-known, and we wouldn't definitively recommend them (which is easy to say now), and we also no longer offer "dumb" hardware.
We have already had a notice about this on our website for several years...
http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/issues.html
...so, if you want something that works with it, you won't be able to avoid a HEX interface. However, I would assume that Rainer will be understanding and help you acquire a proper interface, and perhaps even take back the (now assembled) kit - but that's just a guess...

Well, goodwill doesn't help me much...
"I just wanted to take a look and see what problems the Audi had, why it wouldn't start, and if it did eventually start after a lot of cranking, why it was making strange noises. And then I wanted to get rid of the car."
"And with my current one, I have absolutely no problems with the kit, so there's no reason to exchange it. Besides, I actually wanted to give the adapter to a friend when I'm finished with it; he once "parked" his under a car tire."
Oh... I'm hesitant to buy a used B4 Audi; I'm afraid it might break down on me.
Is there a way to borrow a compatible tester for a fee?

Okay, so they'll tow it to Audi... and then what? A repair at Audi will be so expensive that I might as well push the Audi myself. And if I just want them to read the error codes, the ADAC won't bring my car back home; that's not a delivery service, it's a roadside assistance service. With the ADAC, the car is...
