"I have a 1C0 959 799 B control unit in my Golf and I wanted to get a replacement before I make any modifications. What are the actual differences between control units with the same number but different letters?"

So far, I have seen:
1C0 959 799 C
1C0 959 799 G
1C0 959 799 AH

or are they compatible with each other?

But what about the color/index code? So far, I've only been able to read it through OBD, and all I get is the telephone number.

Is the part number alone sufficient to determine the function?
