Hello, diesel mechanics.

"I have a question for you. I have the AFN engine in my Golf 2 TDI, but I haven't seen a connector for the VAG interface on the wiring harness. Does it connect directly to the engine control unit (ECU) then? I also have a red 6-8 pin connector under the fuse box. Could it be connected to that?"
Sure, here's the translation:

"A response would be appreciated."
Olli.

Hi Olli,

From your question, I gather that you did not install the AFN yourself. Only the person who installed it can likely answer your question about the diagnostic wiring.
If necessary, you can directly connect to the engine control unit's connector. Do you even have any other diagnostic-capable control units in your vehicle?

Best regards, Rainer.

I installed the engine myself, with the help of the forum here. I completely took over the wiring harness from a 1996 Golf TDI. At the central electrical unit, there's only one red connector remaining. There's only one control unit in the engine compartment, nothing else. I looked at the diagnostic cables and realized that I don't have a free diagnostic connector other than the control unit.
Regards,
Olli.

I don't know what it's supposed to mean...

Hello.

Are there any adapters that I can use to connect the diagnostic cable to the control unit?
Are there any compatible diagnostic cables that fit the control unit?
Regards,
Olli.

No, if there's no other solution, you'll have to find the pins, possibly trace the cables, and then buy an empty OBD connector and populate it with the pins yourself.

Or, you could directly locate the pins on the control unit, create an adapter from the diagnostic cable to loose wires, and then check for loose wiring. However, that would be too cumbersome for me, as it would require you to remove and expose the control unit each time.

The following items are available for ordering by all dealers:

Diagnosis socket: 3A0 972 695.
Wires with pins already crimped: 000 979 011

You only need 3 or 4 lines.

Pin 16: Terminal 30, preferably protected by a 5A fuse.
Pin 4: Ground.
Pin 7: K-line to MSG.
Pin 15: L-wire to the MSG (I'm not sure if this applies to your MSG, check the wiring diagram for the E36 with AFN engine).

I have one more question. Which pins should I connect the diagnostic cable to? Is there a diagram (pinout) available? My control unit is located on the left side of the engine compartment, where the air filter box used to be. Removing it shouldn't be a problem.
Regards,
Olli.
