Being as clever as I am, I unfortunately had the immobilizer control unit destroyed when I was removing the TDI engine. My question is: if I get an immobilizer control unit, reading coil, and key from a 1996 Passat VR and connect it to the engine wiring harness, shouldn't the engine start? Because the engine control unit and the immobilizer control unit don't necessarily need to be paired, right? If I now buy a new immobilizer control unit (around €100 at VW), I would have to have it programmed by VW again, which is obvious. But if I get a complete immobilizer system – control unit, coil, and key – shouldn't everything work fine?
Questions upon questions! Thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Danilo

Hi Danilo,
Quote: | | Do the engine control unit and the immobilizer control unit actually need to be paired with each other, or not? |
Yes, the engine control unit (ECU) and immobilizer are a pair. However, depending on the version of the immobilizer, the pairing process can be very simple. For vehicles manufactured in 1996, it should be WFS2 (relatively easy: simply save adaptation channel 0 and clear the error memory).
Best regards, Rainer.

Hello Rainer,
Okay, thanks in advance for the quick information. So, for people like me who dislike electronics, this means: even if I get a complete steering wheel module with the reading coil and matching key and install it all, does everything still have to be unlocked by VW?

A 1996 VR6 definitely doesn't have WFS-2, but rather WFS-1. However, the learning process is a bit more complicated with WFS-1, and a WFS login is required.

Okay, but the WFS module only communicates with the reading coil and then informs the engine control unit that everything is okay. If the WFS module, coil, and key are compatible, why shouldn't it work? Does this system actually require the engine control unit and WFS module to be synchronized? I'm already frustrated enough, and now on top of that, the engine is going into a car (Corrado) that was never offered with a diesel engine, so the VW people are already stressed out enough when I tell them to "just do it"...
Can all of this be done with a VAG-COM device, or does it have to be performed online at a car dealership, as a friend who is a VW service technician told me?

An immobilizer always consists of at least three components: the engine, the immobilizer control unit, and the key. In your case, the immobilizer control unit is separate, but in newer models, it is often integrated into the instrument cluster or, for example, in the comfort control module in the current Passat. Pairing the individual components does not necessarily require online access, but it does require an immobilizer system login. Official VW/Audi dealers obtain this login online (which is what your friend meant), but there are also other ways to get it. Usually, you can find it on the key ring of the spare key in older vehicles.

"Thanks for the information. That's definitely very frustrating. When doing modifications on a Corrado, you can easily forget a connector, which means the engine won't even start. And according to my colleague, not all immobilizer programming works with VW either, meaning if it doesn't run, you don't know if it's due to the immobilizer or the modification itself, and that's something I could really get angry about."

To be honest, what you're writing only makes limited sense. It seems your source of information is anything but accurate, let alone reliable. If the immobilizer is the cause, the engine will always start, but then die after 1-2 seconds. If the engine doesn't start at all, then something else is the problem. I'm also surprised to hear that the immobilizer adjustment doesn't always work on VW vehicles.

If it makes you feel better, I also experience something similar every day.

Hello Sebastian!
I can only repeat what I'm told. If the engine starts and runs briefly, I can live with that; then I know everything is probably okay. However, one person said the engine just sputters but doesn't actually start. Another (also supposedly a VW expert, although that doesn't necessarily mean anything) said nothing happens at all. Then I can't rule out other installation errors. Hopefully, I'll experience this myself this weekend. If it's as you say, it's not so bad, and I can be confident that everything is generally fine on the way to the VW dealership. Thanks in any case for the good information!

So, as I understand it, you want to rule out the possibility that it's something other than a WFS issue.

"If it were just a connector issue and not related to the WFS, you should at least have some error codes stored in the engine control unit (or pump control unit if you have one), right? If the engine control unit doesn't show any errors (other than potentially WFS-related ones – I'm not sure if problems with the WFS are also logged there), then you can probably assume it's the WFS itself."
You should definitely have your assumption confirmed by the diagnostic experts here before proceeding. It's possible that the WFS is causing errors (perhaps due to a problem with the pump), which would prevent you from making any further progress. Aktuell:
