HI.
My BMR (2.0 TDI 170PS DPF) beeps when the ignition is on.
You only hear it when the engine is off, because it's so quiet.
A BMP (2.0 TDI 140 hp with DPF) doesn't do that.
It's a typical PWM beep sound that lingers for the usual amount of time after it stops, and then it's silent.
Is that the eVTG?

Hello Martin,
Do you have an electronic valve control system (eVTG)? In SSP316, the 140 hp engine is described, and it mentions a solenoid valve for the VTG.
However, the throttle valve V157 is operated by an electric motor. According to IDR, the control signal for electric throttle valves is a PWM signal. I know from various vehicles that the throttle motor is quite noisy because the frequency of the control signal is high.
The solenoid valves are usually operated with a PWM signal of a lower frequency, which makes them 'quieter.'
Best regards, Jochen.

Hi.
I need to double-check the eVTG regulations. Currently, I only see the vehicle at night.
At least three cables go into the unit, unlike the 140 HP 8V DPF (BMP) version, where the unit was previously a vacuum pump.
Theoretically, those could also be distance sensors...

I can also search ... My BMN also whistles as described (of course, "same" engine). I actually meant that it's whistling under the valve cover and I suspected the piezo elements. But - why should they have a "run-on"?
Regards,
Pete.

It's not impossible that an electronic throttle valve (ETV) is installed. I encountered something like that in 2003 on an Opel engine.
When the VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry) is controlled via a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal, the same principles apply as with a throttle valve.
Best regards, Jochen.
[edit]
The piezo injectors do not operate with a PWM signal, but with a DC voltage.
See the piezoelectric effect for more information.
The displacement of the piezoelectric elements is proportional to the applied (direct) voltage.
The control voltage for this motor is between 100 and 200V.

The Touran has a BMN engine with electric turbocharging. I'm not sure if it was making any unusual noises, as I only drove it once.
I believe that the third generation of Garrett VTG turbochargers always features eVTG, or at least that's what I seem to recall reading in MTZ magazine. I'll check it out!

I found a few more pictures of my motorcycle on my hard drive and I'll post them here.
I still believe that the squealing sound is coming from one of those "humps" in the valve cover; it also becomes noticeably louder when you remove the engine cover.
I couldn't get the plug off the VTG in my dark garage before.
Regards,
Pete.

Hello Pete,
It could also be the exhaust gas recirculation system and/or the throttle valve. The resonance chamber of the intake manifold would wonderfully amplify the carrier frequency, and you could hear it at the valve cover, which is located directly next to the intake manifold.
Both components are controlled via a PWM signal.
Currently, I am unaware of what else is being controlled by a PWM signal under the valve cover. However, it is definitely not the piezo injectors.
How do you actually get 200V DC from 12V DC?
Correct, a DC/DC converter!
Depending on the design, it may emit a whistling sound because a switching signal is generated to facilitate the conversion, which is then stepped up in voltage and subsequently rectified.
I can easily imagine placing this converter under the valve cover, so that the 200 V high voltage (!) cannot be touched.
Your pictures clearly show that the VTG is now electrically powered in the new Garett loader.
So, we've solved that problem already.
Best regards, Jochen.

Hello everyone,
For clarification, this is not an eVTG (electric vehicle charging technology), but rather the electrical connection for the path sensor.
Best regards,

It might be possible. Here's another picture of the can, taken from the top right. So, there's still a vacuum connection.
Therefore, the most likely source of the squealing sound is the voltage conversion mentioned above. Actually, the squealing isn't that quiet; it's quite annoying, even with the hood closed and insulated, especially when you're, for example, cleaning the windows and have to leave the ignition on because of the electric front windows.
Regards,
Pete.

Mönsch! Suffocating closeness!
"Does that make the timing belt replacement even more fun?! All those hoses and containers have to be removed. Is there enough space, or does the engine have to be removed? Does anyone know?"
"The recommended replacement interval is 120,000 km, right?"
The AGR (Abgasgasrückführung) system must also function 100% reliably in these engines, right? Otherwise, how can anyone ensure clean intake passages?

Euro4 or OBD2 regulations make it possible.

Even with all 4-cylinder engines, it's cheaper and faster than with the V6, or
