Hi,
Is it possible to replace the strut mounts without removing the shock absorber assembly?
Or is that too cumbersome?
'Thank you.'

You won't be able to push the shock absorber and control arm down as far.

Either compress the spring with a spring compressor and push the piston rod down with a dome rod, or proceed as follows.

'Or, you can remove the wheel bearing housing from the ball joint, push the driveshaft out, and lower the shock absorber. But in that case, you've probably already completely disassembled it.'

In this case, it might also be possible to save money by separating the shock absorber from the wheel bearing housing (using one screw and plenty of rust remover). Adjusting the axle geometry is unlikely to be a problem in this scenario.

Before removal, it is essential to check if the suspension spring may be broken and resting directly against the strut mount. If this is the case, the entire assembly could come loose and potentially fall, if the damper is detached from the strut mount.

Okay, it's not very easy to pull the shock absorber out of the wheel bearing housing using a feather-edged tool. The problem is that you can't lower the wheel bearing housing far enough to be able to pull the shock absorber out. Eventually, the driveshaft will hit the frame, and you can't go any further.

The simplest method is to disconnect the tie rod, remove the wheel bearing housing from the control arm, pull the driveshaft out of the wheel bearing housing, and then you can easily remove the shock absorber. The disassembly time is about 15 minutes per side. You won't affect the axle geometry as long as you don't loosen the ball joint from the control arm.

Well, it's not very sexy to pull the shock absorber out of the wheel bearing housing with a pry bar. The problem is that you can't lower the wheel bearing housing far enough to pull the shock absorber out. Eventually, the driveshaft will hit the frame and you can't go any further.

No, I did it last week. You just need to loosen the tie rod.

But whatever, everyone should do what they want.

Hmm, maybe it's related to the large waves or the transmission? I have a 6-speed on my ALH. In my case, it definitely didn't work. The shaft was hitting the frame.

Thank you all for your answers.
Then we'll remove the shock absorber; it's really not that difficult.
Furthermore, new shock absorbers can be installed at the same time.
What kind of standard suspension systems are available there?

I got the Boge shocks at a good price. I went with the turbo versions, as they should be a bit sportier. However, I can't say for sure since the old ones were worn out. Overall, I'm satisfied; I've put over 60,000 km on them and everything is still okay.
Aktuell:

It also works with ALH! icon_biggrin.gif
